DENAI MOORE | BLAME | VIDEO

Denai Moore has shared a video for her new single ‘Blame’. The single is featured on the singer’s debut album ‘Elsewhere’, out 6th April on Because Music.

Directed by Simon Cahn and shot in Iceland, Moore’s tale of heartbreak is given a frosty and mournful visual, with Moore in the backseat of a car driving through the snow. A powerful and emotional clip, her vehicle is chased by an impassioned male mechanic who chases the car to prevent an eventual crash at the end of the road.

There’s plenty of ambiguity in the video, which is open to interpretation according to Cahn:

“The idea for this music video was to build a climactic fictional sequence around the artist. I wanted to work on a time-loop that drops the viewer at the end of a narrative, leaving just a trail of ambiguous elements, so that each viewer has their own interpretation of what the story could be.” Watch the ambiguity unfold below.”

The Franklys | What You Said | OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO

Fankly speaking, it works.

Hailing from all corners of the globe (well, Europe and North America) London based four piece The Franklys only emerged at the beginning of this year. Yet their naughty, contagious take on garage rock has already seen the quartet sell out the 100 Club before heading back out on the road for more.

Live, the band are a blur of lipstick, rock hard riffs and attitude, with The Franklys coming across as four female Holden Caulfields in the process.

New single ‘What You Said’ is out on Monday (October 13th) and comes accompanied with a video shot – rather incongruously – in the fields of Merry Olde England. It sorta works, though – check it out below.

The Moped Gangs of London: UK Bikelife

Mopeds and teenage boys have gone hand-in-hand since the 1960s. But in the last year UK BikeLife culture – where young scooter riders upload videos of themselves wheelie-ing down motorways and through industrial estates – has exploded, with the scene’s leaders picking up thousands of YouTube and Instagram followers in the process.

These British riders are beginning to receive international attention, not least from Baltimore’s notorious dirt bike club, the 12 O’Clock Boys. Although they may lack the CCs of their American counterparts, they’ve done a good job of making up for it with charisma and a dedication to the underdog of the two-wheeled world: the humble moped.

In London Bikelife, Daisy-May Hudson lets a nostalgia for the moped gangs of her teenage years get the better of her and travels to industrial estates on the outskirts of London to meet with the underground stars of the UK BikeLife scene. After spending some time at northwest London’s Ace Cafe – an iconic hangout for bikers and petrolheads – Daisy is taken along to one of the group’s big ride-outs, where hundreds of boys take over the roads with their mopeds.

Knox Brown | Harry's Code

You should never judge a book by how many superstars it’s written songs for, but with new artist Knox Brown’s star-studded roll call of Jay Z, Aloe Blacc and Mary J Blige, it’s almost impossible to look past it.

“They heard my music and wanted to work,” explains the Jamaican-born musician. “I feel so humbled and slightly gassed. This is what I’ve been dreaming of for the longest while!”

The first Knox Brown track to surface explored dreaming, but not necessarily his. In ‘Redemption Song’ he samples Martin Luther King, Muhammad Ali, Louis Farrakhan and Nelson Mandela to construct a powerful, piano-led track with a smooth Marley-inspired vocal hook over a Southern-style hip-hop beat.

“It wasn’t something I had planned, it sort of happened,” admits Knox, “but the message in that song is basically me looking back at the past and learning from these role models, seeing what people go through and still persevere. Out of a bad situation may come inspiration.”

He’s working on a EP now, and recently released another number called ‘Harry’s Code’ online. Where ‘Redemption Song’ felt more like a bite of Knox’s influences and beliefs, this track is a more complete single. He champions seeing music “without barriers”, and it starts off appropriately, like a classic dub cut, before the electric guitars and percussion slip into a funk and soul swagger, emphasising Knox’s lyrical potential and Jamaican English delivery.

“My first real introduction was when I was at a friend’s house,” begins Knox, explaining his musical genesis. “He put this game called Music 2000 in his PlayStation and my addiction for music production was born after seeing how he was making beats. Whilst in Year 10 at school, I made my first mixtape the summer after and sold 20 copies.”

It’s hard to believe, but the Knox Brown story is only just warming up.

FKA twigs | Two Weeks

The London-based R&B aesthete FKA twigs has been slowly churning out atmospheric, breathy beat-pop since the release of EP1 back in December of 2012. After the release of her daring and distended EP2, one of SPIN's Best R&B Albums of 2013, she's finally gearing up for the release of her debut full-length, appropriately titled LP1. "Two Weeks," the first track from that record, premiered yesterday on Ellie Goulding's BBC Radio 1 takeover, and now today it has an official video.

In the clip, Twigs herself takes a seat on a throne to star as a goddess who can shoot water from the tip of her finger. The intensely choreographed video mirrors the disjointed otherworldliness of the track itself, marrying its digital percussion rumbles and shimmering synth lines to the swooning movements of a couple of background dancers.

This visual is directed by Nabil, who's also handled videos for Nicki Minaj and Arctic Monkeys, in addition to shooting SPIN's Frank Ocean cover story.

LP1 is due out August 12 on Young Turks. The "Two Weeks" video is above, and below are the album's cover and track list.

Hebru Brantley Is Chicago’s Hip-Hop Art Star

He was a former street artist born in Bronzeville—and now the 33-year-old’s work fetches thousands from blue bloods and rappers alike.



An hour with the graffiti-artist-turned-painter Hebru Brantley in his Pilsen studio—a large warehouse loft full of cluttered tables piled with spray paint cans, bags of Skittles, and half-finished canvases—feels like a minor lesson in multitasking. In a matter of minutes, the six-foot-eight artist checks the sales numbers on his online store (hebrubrandstore.com), fields phone calls from a Hong Kong collector, and puts the final touches on one of his comic-book-style pop-art paintings. He will later hop on a plane to London, where he has a solo show at the gallery Mead Carney. “It’s a little crazy right now,” says Brantley with a sly smile.

At 33, Brantley is one of Chicago’s fastest-rising artists, with some of his works commanding upward of $100,000 and a rapidly growing collector base that includes entrepreneur Matthew Pritzker and rap impresario Jay Z (who spent $20,000 on a Brantley painting in 2012). In the last year alone, Brantley has had work in 10 gallery shows and was the featured artist for both Chicago Artists Month and Chicago Ideas Week. Now, on June 14, he will premiere nearly 40 new works in Parade Day Rain, a solo show at the Chicago Cultural Center. “It’s a big moment,” he says. “This is my chance to put you in my world.”

Brantley’s Instagram feed depicts a world right out of a Kanye West music video. There are photos of him skateboarding with Lil Wayne, smoking cigars with Carmelo Anthony, and hanging with Lenny Kravitz. In an era when most street artists find fame from the shadows, Brantley has built a brand by broadcasting his ties with America’s glitterati.

Growing up in Bronzeville, he spent most weekends cruising the South Side looking for walls to tag and train cars to mark. “We’d scratch-bomb on trains, tag freight cars—you know, do throw-ups across the city,” Brantley says of the ’90s graffiti scene. “It was all about getting your name up wherever you could.”

He didn’t discover high art until he was 16 and his mother, Pamela Glover, an assistant at Johnson Publishing Company, gave him a book on Jean-Michel Basquiat. “I was entranced by him. It was like looking at the guy who did it first,” says Brantley. “He was a rock star.”

Two years later, in 1999, Brantley headed to Clark Atlanta University to study film. But he quickly soured on the industry (long hours, little creative control), preferring to sneak into art classes at the Art Institute of Atlanta. “I started exploring different things beyond Basquiat. I was honing my own style,” he explains. “It was like a crash course in painting.”

For the next couple of years, Brantley made ends meet working at HMV Records while painting on the side. Then, in 2002, he made his first sale. “My friend [Philadelphia record producer] DJ Drama bought a painting for $800. It was a big confidence boost,” Brantley recalls. “After that, I started thinking about just doing art.”

Today, Brantley’s work, like Basquiat’s, nods to black American history and gritty urban life. But he also brings his own affinities—Marvel comics, hip-hop music—to the canvas. His 2012 piece Captain, O’ My Captain, for example, depicts a black Captain America taking a cigarette break. “The paintings don’t take themselves very seriously,” he says. “I’m a kid at heart. But they still have some of those darker undertones.”

Some of that darkness comes from Brantley’s own life. Five years ago, he lost both his mother and stepfather to cancer within a six-month period. “I wasn’t painting much at that time,” he says. “I had moved back to Chicago to take care of my parents, and I felt drained. But I started to carry a sketchbook. I figured at the very least I could journal what was happening.”

It was during those doctor visits and hospital stays that Brantley began sketching work for a solo show, Fade Resistant, at Three Peas Art Lounge, a now-defunct gallery in the South Loop. “My mom just really wanted to make it to the show, but on the day I was going to take her, she lost vision in one eye and didn’t have the strength to walk,” Brantley says. Though Glover never saw the show, Brantley recalls that she gave him a piece of advice that stuck: “Be shark-like. Always moving, never stopping.”

To hear Brantley tell it, his rapid rise is due as much to his role as a savvy salesman and networker as to his art. “It’s all about growth. I want to do films, heavy licensing deals. I want to run the whole gamut,” he says. “I want people to come out of the shower and step on a Hebru Brantley rug.”

Mangoseed | Brix-Tone

South London Reggae fusionists Mangoseed have released a single inspired by Brixton called ‘Brix-Tone’ which is available to download now ahead of their debut album which is released next month.

The single echoes the 1980s dub and reggae grooves that have become synonymous with the area and the video was shot on the streets of Brixton.

The track is the lead single taken from the local band’s debut album ‘BASQUIAT’ which is released on Monday 22nd May with a live launch party at The Alley Cat Bar & Club on Denmark Street in the West End.



A truly multicultural collective, Mangoseed is made up by a Trinidadian, a Jamaican, an Australian and an Irishman.

They play regularly in Brixton, have supported the likes of Alabama 3 and Manu Chao, and say their début album is inspired by the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and his stylistic approach of art, history and culture, all of which can be found layered throughout his paintings.

​Dios Mio up their game on new single “Stories”, released on 30 June with a launch party to follow at London’s Old Blue Last on 4 July.

After the band introduced themselves with a couple of raw but highly promising demos last year, the London quartet are back with their full debut release this summer.

In a marked progression, Dios Mio benefit from warm, rounded production on “Stories”, which sees that their brand of grunge-tinged pop is effortlessly accentuated.

What’s more, built on a rigid rhythm section in which the drums and distorted bass allow for a brash intro, the melodic swells of guitar combined with Helena Coan’s delicate vocal means that “Stories” is perhaps a more diverse song than it might initially appear.
