Kali Uchis | Loner | Video

The Colombian pop priestess shows that it’s fun to be alone in her dreamy new video

here’s something strangely calming about watching Kali Uchis dance by the jukebox, sip candy-coloured milkshakes and sing beneath the neon lights of an abandoned drive-in. Maybe it’s because her voice drifts like icing sugar over a cake, or maybe it’s because she’s completely, gloriously alone – and sometimes there is nothing more liberating. The dreamy track itself is titled "Loner" and it's all about embracing your inner loneliness. “I wanted this music video to portray a strong sense of being very grown, content alone and feeling yourself,” the Colombian-born, East Coast singer told Dazed about the stylish self-directred visual, adding: “I was inspired by mermaids, call-girls, the actress Mia Farrow, the film Scarface and the director Quentin Tarantino”

SNOOP DOGG | SO MANY PROS | VIDEO

Last month, Snoop Dogg finally released “Peaches N Cream”—the first single from his forthcoming Pharrell produced album Bush and it gave us a preview of the funky sound they were going for. Now Snoop has released the video for this second single “So Many Pros” and this might be even funkier than the first.

The entire video is full of ’70s inspired movie posters of films featuring Snoop Dogg that deep down we wish existed. The visuals fit the sound of this new jam just perfectly. The song also features background vocals by Charlie Wilson. And at this point, songs don’t even need to say “featuring Charlie Wilson” anymore because his voice is very clear, we all know it and love it. I’m personally hoping this entire album is Snoop, Pharrell and Charlie because they’ve proved over and over again that they can create magic together.

Watch the video below.

Fresh Dressed | Documentary | In Select Theaters June 26

Fresh Dressed is a documentary by filmmaker Sacha Jenkins that explores the history of urban street culture which was highly influenced by fashion and hip-hop.

The documentary was co-produced by Nas and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Combining old-school video footage and interviews, director Sacha Jenkins — who’s also the creative director of the magazine "Mass Appeal" — sends the audience on a whirlwind trip through the history of hip-hop and fashion. From the breakdancers' custom outfits in the South Bronx during the ‘70s to the ‘80s designer Dapper Dan (known for spray painting designer logos on T-shirts from his Harlem apartment) to Rocawear, the clothing line started by Jay Z in the '90s, the references here stretch far and wide.

Additionally, he’s enlisted more than 70 music and fashion industry players including Pharrell Williams, Andre Leon Talley and Tisci to weigh in on how hip-hop has influenced them — and vice versa.

Watch a clip from the upcoming film below.

This interview is part of KCRW's coverage of the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.

The Breakbeat Poets | New American Poetry in the Age of Hip Hop | Trailer

A new poetry compilation titled The BreakBeat Poets: New American Poetry in the Age of Hip Hop was released yesterday by Haymarket Books. Filled with the writings of 78 poets and modern scribes fro all over the world–writers whose work is deeply enmeshed in the music and culture of hip-hop–the compilation appears to be an obvious must-read for anyone interested in the deep and every-growing motifs of wordplay, cadence, rhyme structure and symbolism that run through both mediums.

In anticipation of the book, a brand new trailer has been released, offering us a taste of what sort of candor and content to expect from The BreakBeat Poets. Co-edited by Kevin Coval, it features work from Lemon Andersen, Fatimah Asghar, Joshua Bennett and many more. Cutting a decidedly Midwestern course, the book includes poems from numerous Chicago-area artists, and editor Coval has been a mainstay of the windy city for ample time now. GoldLink | Sober Thoughts | New Video

DMV native GoldLink finally releases a video for "Sober Thoughts," which comes about a year after he originally dropped the song over the enticing Kaytranada production. The video is actually quite an experience, and even though GoldLink doesn't make an appearance, viewers get the first hand look at the emotional tribulations of a wild house party that is set off by the electronic and hip-hop mix of GoldLink's blistering track.

CHIEF KEEF AND ANDY MILONAKIS | GLOGANG | VIDEO

How can u not like Andy Milonakis and Chief Keef flying through space in a Rolls-Royce. It is literally outside any earthly realm. Maybe, when we noticed Andy Milonakis and Chief Keef had struck up an unlikely friendship, we could have predicted this. But there is no predicting that any friendship or creative partnership will lead to Andy Milonakis surfing on the rings of Saturn or Chief Keef rapping from inside of a giant space Rubiks cube, which are both things that happen in the video for "GLOGANG."

Major Lazer & DJ Snake feat. MØ) | Lean On

Major Lazer are back with “Lean On,” the production team’s first new track of the year and what’s supposed to serve as the start for an onslaught of projects in 2015. Featuring vocals from pop up-and-comer MØ — whose No Mythologies To Follow was severely underrated last year — the track minimizes Major Lazer’s stereotypical dancehall influences, filtering them down into what basically sounds like … well, a MØ song, I guess. The quieter bits even remind me a little bit of “Take Ü There” without the huge drop, but I guess you can’t blame Diplo for going to the same well twice. Major Lazer worked on the track with “Turn Down For What”‘s DJ Snake. Listen below.
