Beatport Launching Free Streaming Service

Words by Nelson Liu/Mass Appeal

Online dance music retailer Beatport is set to relaunch in 2015 with a focus on streaming, introducing a free ad-supported service to compliment its online store. Beatport was established back in 2004, but the relaunch comes after the service was purchased in 2013 by Robert F.X. Sillerman’s SFX entertainment,

While SFX is still negotiating with major labels Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Warner Music Group over the streaming plans, about 90% of the retailer’s database comes from smaller independent labels, so it’s not terribly important to get the majors board.

Since DJs constitute a majority of Beatport’s customer base, the download store will still continue under the Beatport Pro umbrella.

The new Beatport will also provide “event information, artist profiles, and potentially live-streamed performances,” in an effort to consolidate SFX’s network of sites.

Mangoseed | Brix-Tone

South London Reggae fusionists Mangoseed have released a single inspired by Brixton called ‘Brix-Tone’ which is available to download now ahead of their debut album which is released next month.

The single echoes the 1980s dub and reggae grooves that have become synonymous with the area and the video was shot on the streets of Brixton.

The track is the lead single taken from the local band’s debut album ‘BASQUIAT’ which is released on Monday 22nd May with a live launch party at The Alley Cat Bar & Club on Denmark Street in the West End.

A truly multicultural collective, Mangoseed is made up by a Trinidadian, a Jamaican, an Australian and an Irishman.

They play regularly in Brixton, have supported the likes of Alabama 3 and Manu Chao, and say their début album is inspired by the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and his stylistic approach of art, history and culture, all of which can be found layered throughout his paintings.

To find out more check out their official website: http://www.mangoseed.co.uk/ You can download the single from iTunes and Amazon.

ALESIA x M.I.A | Pull Up The People

“SURPRISE MOTHERF*CKER” announced French duo, Alesia, this morning regarding a free download drop featuring vocals from the talented M.I.A. “Pull Up The People” furthers Alesia’s allegiance to no genres, incorporating elements of Techno, Hip Hop, and Electro for a beastly, bass-heavy rumbler that perfectly conjoins with M.I.A’s distorted vocals. Bounce along to this great, gritty collaboration.
