Oyinda | Restless

New York based singer/songwriter/producer Oyinda made her official EP debut this week with the release of Before the Fall. “Each song explores the bittersweet aspects of experience. It marks the moment when I realized I had changed,” Oyinda told Billboard. Of the four tracks on the self-produced EP, “Restless” is the only one we hadn’t previously heard, and feels both timeless and vital as it vividly details feelings of anxiety and fear. Amidst rapid drums and thunderous guitars, the 22-year-old observes “Your mind is restless,/You’re feeling anxious,/You’re running rapid into the dark of your eyes.” With imagistic lines and a storm-like production of winding synths and echoes, “Restless” further proves Oyinda is a highly gifted lyricist with a great ear for palpable, darkly vibrant sounds. Listen to the song below, which premiered on Billboard. Before the Fall is available to purchase on iTunes and stream on Spotify now. Oyinda performs this Saturday, November 15th, at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn. Follow Oyinda on facebook, twitter, and soundcloud.

Jojo Abot Performs 2 Songs Off Her Forthcoming EP Debut, ‘Fyfya Woto’

Ghanaian Afro-Soul Singer Jojo Abot Performs 2 Songs Off Her Forthcoming EP Debut, ‘Fyfya Woto’

Ghanaian afro-soul songstress was in the midst of readying her debut EP, Fyfya Woto, a conceptual project produced by Copenhagen’s Jonas Rendbo which will focus on “a woman’s right to choose.” While we await news of an official release date, Abot has previewed two new singles off the record in the form of live videos filmed at Copenhagen’s Millfactory Studios with Abot and her three-man band.

The eclectic singer cites South African reggae icon Lucky Dube as one of the musical influences that shaped the making of Fyfya Woto, and the first track “To Li” bears witness to this influence as Abot spits in Ewe and English over a midtempo reggae groove. On “Pi Lo Lo” (named for the Ghanaian children’s game similar to hide and seek) Abot shows off her vocal versatility over a slow-burning electronic beat anchored by ethereal synths while exploring the risks of infidelity and the consequences that come with openly expressing a forbidden love. Watch both videos below. For more on Jojo Abot read the preview of Stocktown’s Afripedia, a new 5-part documentary series on creatives in Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, Angola, and Senegal.

Alo Wala - Timbuktu (feat. The Clerk) | Cityboy

A monster of a song, “Timbuktu” by rising global bass rapper / group Alo Wala melds into all sorts of moods–calm, jumpy, even forlorn. Opening with a small percussive swirl of taps, jangles, and pings, the song suddenly stops: “Here we go/See me flow/’Round and ’round I go,” the project’s Chicago-born, Copenhagen-based vocalist Shivani Ahlowalia (aka Alo Wala) starts in her candied voice, hand claps and drum bangs circling under her. Strings and a cascade of muffled electronics then crash hard as she continues, “I rolled through Timbuktu a long long time ago, I got my people and fresh heat no matter where I go.”

As it turns out, Ahlowalia spent time in a different part of West Africa: Guinea-Bissau. It was there that she co-founded the country’s first quality recording studio. Prior to the professional Cobiana studio being built, Bissau-Guinean artists would need to travel to Lisbon or Paris for quality recording sessions, Ahlowalia says. “I worked very hard in particular on a project called Hip Hop Harmony,” a program that brought her to Senegal, The Gambia, Mali, Mauritania and Morocco, to work with regional unification through hip-hop. After joining with tropical bass group Copia Doble Systema and VJ Mad Es to become a full band, Ahlowalia / Alo Wala toured India earlier this year, and went on to play shows in Morocco (at L’Boulevard Festival– more on this to come on Okayafrica) and Russia. This Monday, the group is set to release their debut EP, Cityboy, which closes with “Timbuktu.” Speaking on her connection to the Malian city the song takes its name from, Ahlowalia explained:

“It’s a common expression to say ‘from here to Timbuktu,’ Timbuktu referring to a place far away, almost intangible or impossible to arrive to. So what happens when you’ve been there to the impossible place so very far away? Where do you go from there? That’s what the tune is about. For me Timbuktu represents the turning point, where the journey becomes less about a destination, and more about knowing one’s self; the journey within.”

Listen to “Timbuktu” & her other releases below. Alo Wala’s Cityboy is out November 10th via Enchufada.

Download thestand4rd's Debut Album

thestand4rd—a meeting of midwestern R&B misfits Psymun, Bobby Raps, Allan Kingdom, and Spooky Black—have released their Doc McKinney-produced and DJ Khaled-blessed self-titled debut album. In their recent GEN F profile, the group describes their collaborative work as "the most natural shit ever" despite the differences in their solo work, and that manifests tiself in the ease with which they shift between genres—in particular, hip-hop, R&B, and ambient electronic. "I don't know the last time you saw four individual artists from different sides of the spectrum and from the same town come together," Bobby explains. "That's why when people hear us and it's unexpected, it's like, 'Okay, that's the standard." Stream the 11-track project via SoundCloud below, or head here to download.

Flying Lotus shares new Captain Murphy song | Cosplay

When he’s not deftly blending the worlds of electronic music, jazz, and IDM, super-producer Flying Lotus indulges his rhyme-slaying skills as the mysterious Captain Murphy. FlyLo’s identity as the rappin’ captain was the source of great mystery following the project’s emergence in early 2012, before he outed himself with the project’s first official release, the Duality mixtape.

Just yesterday, Flying Lotus announced the release of You’re Dead!, which promises two tracks featuring Captain Murphy. In anticipation, he’s shared a standalone single called “Cosplay” as part of the 2014 installment of Adult Swim’s Singles Program.

The track continues with the same kind of dense, brooding vibe FlyLo/Murphy started with Duality. His vocals are somewhere between a serpentine whisper and a pitchy, almost demonic cackle, an aesthetic further heightened by the haunted house piano, creaking bass, and swirling studio effects. Lyrically, he’s all over the map, dropping references about zombies and interplanetary travel, while managing to sneak in disheartening lines like “Cosplay like she nerdy … prefer it when she hurt me.” Cosplay, it ain’t just for dweebs.

To accompany the announcement, Adult Swim and Flying Lotus recently teamed up to create an animated origins story for Captain Murphy. It’s an intriguing and insightful story about maturity, self-assurance, and, um, scorpion sex. According to Noisey, the soundtrack is comprised of snippets of new Flying Lotus material. Watch it below.

OSUNLADE | MIXMAG SET | DEFECTED

Founded in 1999, Defected Records has been a dance music mainstay, consistently delivering releases from some of house music's most respected and innovative artists. Run by Simon Dunmore, early releases on the London label came from the likes of Bob Sinclar and Mr G while the last few years have provided a home for Tensnake's inimitable 2010 hit 'Coma Cat' and the remix vinyl of Storm Queen's 'Look Right Through'.

Yoruba Records owner Osunlade has been a member of the Defected family since remixing Reel People's 'In The Sun' in 2006. He has three big album releases this year, spanning a rich range of vibes: a soul-funk vinyl-only album, 'Peacock', an ambient electronic project and a new mix CD 'Atonement'.
