Oddisee and Phonte's | Requiem | New Music

Mello Music Group is currently preparing their annual compilation project, and today, they debut the first single, "Requiem," from Oddisee and Phonte. Over some funky production from Oddisee himself, the conscious track focuses on the recent struggles of society, particularly the killing of unarmed black men by police, as they mention, "Anything from candy to cigarettes can get a n***a killed," which is reference to the death of Eric Garner.

The album, titled Persona, is currently available for pre-order on iTunes and on the Mello Music Group Website before its release on March 10, and is set to also feature appearances from Ras Kass, Rapper Big Pooh, Kool Keith, Apollo Brown, and more. If most compilations are nothing more than a loosely thrown together collection of songs, Persona boasts meticulous focus. These aren’t spare tracks, they’re potent messages and poisonous darts. “Requiem” finds Phonte and Oddisee indicting American racism and Xenophobia with fury and precision. On “Homicide,” yU and Nottz leave blood dripping all over the canvas. There’s “Reductionist Prayer,” where Open Mike Eagle lampoons fundamentalists and religious zealots over Oddisee’s warm Stevie Wonder keyboards.

But there’s ultimately no need to do the track-by-track breakdown. This is an anthology in the most traditional well-curated sense. Turn here if you want to find the best hip-hop artists of their generation in raw and unfiltered form. The bars are brimstone; the beats force your neck to swivel. Through all the discontent, rays of hope begin to emerge. If you remember the feeling you got when you first heard Soundbombing, stop searching. Clairmont The Second doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, but it’s his real name—no gimmicks. Clairmont doesn’t have much time to talk to me on the phone, so I have to call him during his spare period of high school, where he is currently enrolled until he graduates at the end of this year. His current day-to-day is typical for a teenager in Toronto, filled with the same mundane activities that most other 17-year olds have no choice but enjoy, like going to class and playing basketball extracurricularly. But Clairmont The Second doesn’t want to have a typical teenager’s life anymore, which is why he’s putting all of his efforts into music.

Clairmont’s second ever project is imaginatively titled Project II and can be best described as being a post-Chance The Rapper, post-Acid Rap release. “I love it but I hate it at the same time” says Clairmont when asked about the comparisons to Chance, whose 2012 mixtape ignited the internet. “He’s one of my favourite artists and he’s a big inspiration, but I also want to be my own person.” But outside of the Chicago native, Clairmont counts some of his hometown Toronto peers as inspiration as well. “I listen to a lot of everything, but during this album I was listening to a lot of bizZarh, Dom Kennedy, and The OBGMs.” Clairmont recorded this project in the comfort of his own bedroom, which he has recently remodelled to help him achieve a better state of relaxation. “It’s a good environment and very chill space. I think better when I’m more relaxed and I’m more effective.”



Most of the raps on Project II are centred around the same tropes you’d expect an 17-year old to rap about: relationships with girls, the perceived invalidity of high school, and how terrible it is to take the bus. But the way that these seemingly insignificant topics get woven together through Clairmont’s sparse narration that builds into a sudden crescendo keeps the listener entertained throughout the tape. He also produced most of the tape on his own, adding to the already impressive laundry list of tasks associated with the project. With no classic training, Clairmont is learning lessons in unlikely places. “I have an orchestra class that I take this semester in high school, but it’s not really teaching me anything. It’s teaching me what not to do.”

When asked what he hopes people take away from this album, he pauses for long enough for me to assume the call has dropped. “I want them to take away that I’m mature for my age and ahead of my time. And that I can actually make music that's not like anything else.”

Goldlink Gifts 3 Unreleased Demos Late Christmas Night

Goldlink has had an insane year from his breakout album “The God Complex” to working with Zhu, Kaytranada and Chet Faker. We got a late night Christmas present from him last night in the form of 3 unreleased demos. Consisting of 2 originals and an incredible track that Disclosure worked on with Disclosure. The man’s flow is undeniable and the sky is the limit for this amazing hip hop artist. Joey Bada$$ has dropped a new BA.4D.A$$ track as a holiday gift for all his fans—more specifically, his number one fan: his mother. Featuring dusty horns and a whole lot of heart, "Curry Chicken" is a sweet, sentimental ode to Joey's mother and her home cooking. I got your back, ain't got to worry, he raps. Tink is taking over in 2015. Timbaland introduces his 19-year-old protégée in the dark and gritty video for “Around the Clock” featuring “The Breakfast Club’s” Charlamagne Tha God. The Chicago rapper-singer spits some killer bars while flanked by Timbo, who creeps in the shadows. Stream Diamond District’s ‘March On Washington Redux’ LP

Diamond District dropped the full stream of their March On Washington Redux LP today. The 13-track collection from Uptown XO, yU and Oddisee features a reworking of their album, March On Washington (released just a few months ago, and including some of their best marathon music) by such producers as Large Professor, Apollo Brown, and Nottz. The lyrics are kept in tact while tracks like “Working Weekends” (remixed by Large Pro) re-captures the mood of these times, and cuts like “Ain’t Over” smooth out the urgency of the original (this one done with a touch of Black Milk).

Today we hear “Knucklehead,” an outspoken collaboration about being a bold juvenile, featuring Lil Herb and Earl Sweatshirt. The repeated phrase “diaries of a knucklehead” is interspersed between several recounted memories by Lil Herb and Earl and layered over Earl’s seamless production, which directs attention to their poignant raps. There's 7 Wonders of the World. An 8th wonder was always a question to people. I feel like my mind state & where I'm from(Baltimore, MD) is that 8th wonder that people don't get to see that often. My creation is a thing in it's own, which I like to call "8th World".
What you hear is what it is, man. Just some good ol' stories told on good ol' production, good ol' vibes, good influences, bad influences & all of what you can ask for from a nigga coming from East Baltimore, but has seen more than just that. Its just me. I put my thoughts, personality, my hometown, places i been & experiences into this project.
