Earl Sweatshirt | Solace | EP
Earl Sweatshirt releases “Solace” – a ten-minute long track/project/release dedicated to his mom. If you cast your mind back, or listen to the content of Earl’s lyrics, the strain between Earl and his Mother was caused by the “time he spent on that island” – the correctional facility in Samoa he was sent to as Odd Future simultaneously blew up. When that happened, “Free Earl” became a phenomenon, printed on t-shirts, hollered at rap shows, blasted on Twitter - and most fans blamed Earl’s mum for his departure.
“After Samoa and the shit that happened with my mom, after all that ‘Free Earl’ shit, I was super self-conscious about how I engaged my mom with the public,” Earl told Grantland. “I would be in a position to give an honest and nonbiased critique on my mom if there hadn’t been this immediate fucking negative image and stigma attached to her out the gate… That was the most fucked ever. People was all in her emails, people were calling her and shit”.
On “Solace”, Earl Sweatshirt gets to lay his mindset down. The name of the track is telling: it’s an exorcism. A moment to set his feelings free, get them out into the world, and find comfort and peace as a result. Listen below:

Lil Herb Ft. Earl Sweatshirt | Knucklehead
Young Chicago-based rapper Lil Herb has been making his collaborative rounds in 2014, from his feature in Nicki Minaj’s “Chi-Raq” to the “Fight or Flight” remix he did with fellow Chicagoans Chance The Rapper and Common. Today we hear “Knucklehead,” an outspoken collaboration about being a bold juvenile, featuring Lil Herb and Earl Sweatshirt. The repeated phrase “diaries of a knucklehead” is interspersed between several recounted memories by Lil Herb and Earl and layered over Earl’s seamless production, which directs attention to their poignant raps. Listen.

Off The Record: Christian Rich
Responsible for Earl Sweatshirt's "Chum" from his recently released album Doris, production duo Christian Rich is the focus of our ongoing Off The Record series. Recalling bringing in Chad Hugo of The Neptunes fame, watch as we're walked through the process of finding the initial melody and the happy accident of recording several vocal samples. The organic and raw nature of the session is evidenced not only by their recollection, but by the final product that is "Chum."
