SUMMARY
If there's a secret to time travel, Kool Keith owns the patent. Even a flying DeLorean seems too conventional for the Bronx legend. He'd more logically orbit throughout the galaxy in a gleaming chrome spaceship, teaching the stars and aliens new forms of originality. He is too weird to live, too rare to die, too uniquely ultra-magnetic to be accurately mimicked.
Released on Mello Music Group, Time? Astonishing! is the latest dimensional warp from hip-hop's premiere astral traveler. His union with MMG producer L' Orange finds him exploring uncharted terrain: choppy volcanic rock planets, ice glacier moons, new surgical procedures, and fresh rappers to toss into the ether. The scalpel remains eternally sharp.
The themes aren't dissimilar from his past opuses as Dr. Octagon and Black Elvis. But L' Orange's production appropriately coaxes the most appealingly baffling gonzo vision from Keith since his days collaborating with Dan "The Automator" Nakamura. This isn't the noir-rap of L'Orange's previous work, but something atmospheric, ethereal, and absurd.
Yet there's a sense of tradition within the playfulness. The beats glow with radioactive grit. Hard enough to knock from your car speakers, cinematic and plutonium-propelled enough to transport you to strange terra firma. Buck Rodgers movie serials meet boom-bap. And along for the odyssey are a cast of the best underground MC's of the last decade: Blu, Open Mike Eagle, Mr. Lif, J-Live, and more.
But the star is Keith Thornton, offering more ammunition for his spot as the most creative rapper of all-time, offering more amazing adventures in the future. While other veterans often look back, Keith always knew that space ships don't come equipped with rear view mirrors.
Every thought is a different action. He's easing into new zones, encountering polygonic time travelers, surrounded by enemies, blasting them with radioactive wave forms. L'Orange is the gunner on the flank, lacing the legend with synthesizers set to stun, great wheeling humid organs, and sad exotic jazz riffs. 1-2-1 Jeff Staple Interview Hip-Hop LEGEND, Kool Keith
Back in October, we flew the coop down to Atlanta for the annual hip-hop festival known as A3C, where jeff was presented with the opportunity to interview hip-hop legend Kool Keith. The entire audience was captivated by the 90’s icon and his insight on what it was like living and working through the “golden era” of hip-hop. Throughout the interview, Keith explains the inspiration behind his sound and why he didn’t follow the popular trends of rapping about the streets and the struggle. “I didn’t have to tell a story about the streets because I grew up in the projects…We live in this already, why keep talking about something that everybody’s going through?” It was Keith’s ability to stay true to himself and his music, that made him such an inspiration for creative individuals everywhere.

Oddisee and Phonte's | Requiem | New Music
Mello Music Group is currently preparing their annual compilation project, and today, they debut the first single, "Requiem," from Oddisee and Phonte. Over some funky production from Oddisee himself, the conscious track focuses on the recent struggles of society, particularly the killing of unarmed black men by police, as they mention, "Anything from candy to cigarettes can get a n***a killed," which is reference to the death of Eric Garner.

Shon Roka (pronounced Shaun Roca) the DJ also known as Shaun Ortega was born on the west-side of Chicago. He started gaining fame as a bboy in 1991 and later became a member of a well known crew called the BRICKHEADZ. He would perform for such artist and events such as The Roots, KRS One, Immortal Technique, Dougie Fresh, Common, Rhymefest, Cypress Hill, Pharoah Monch, Nas, Diddy, Mariah Carey, Taste of Chicago, Lollapolooza, Looptopia, B96 Summer Bash just to name a few. The BRICKHEADZ also won many breakin' competition nationally and internationally. While Shon Roka was being active as a bboy he was working on his craft of being a DJ.
DJing for w/ Nike, Jordan, Under Armour, Adidas, Vans, Uprise (Chicago) Skateshop for numerous in-stores, sporting events, galleries and corporate outings. Also Shon Roka is a resident DJ post Covid in Chicago at McGee's, Tantrum, Imbibe and Harbee's. While being a DJ, he has been teaching music production and the Art of Skateboarding through Maggie Daley's After School Matters. Also known as Gallery 37.

Kool Keith Documentary | Keep It Kool
Kool Keith is a genius. The Ultramagnetic MC’s front-man elevated the artform of lyricism to the highest level through albums like Ultramagnetic MC’s Critical Beatdown and Wild Pitch Records one-off The Four Horsemen. However, along the way, the artist who regularly rhymed about trips to Bellevue Mental Hospital admitted to actual personality disorders, blurring the lines on fictitious raps and brutally honest reality.
Keith interviews, for those that follow the man with personas like Dr. Octagon, Dr. Dooom [sic], the Analog Brother, and the Diesel Trucker, are just as bugged. It is not uncommon for Keith to admit he boasts a car collection in the hundreds, or go on longwinded tangents about his good looks. All of this is an extension of the persona loved by so many Hip-Hop fans (and casual listeners from other genres) since the mid-’80s.
Well, in the new documentary “Keep It Kool,” Mr. Thornton is surprisingly lucid, open, and honest about his life and times. This 30-minute interview, with some show footage mixed in, captures the amazing story behind one of Hip-Hop’s original weirdos, and arguably, one of its absolute lyrical innovators. Watch [him] now:
