2017 INTERNATIONAL TOUR ANNOUNCED
The prolific MC, producer and musician Oddisee’s new album ‘The Iceberg’ is a plea for humanity to dig deeper in search of understanding and common ground. His third release in just 12 months, ‘The Iceberg’ is a distillation of stereotypical tropes in hip-hop and beyond, 12 tracks about money, sex, politics, race and religion that appear superficial until his multi-dimensional lyrics unfurl to expose the complexities of individuality and identity: how we see ourselves and how others see us. Deeply soulful, and shot through with jazz, Go-go, gospel, thick r&b and hard beats, the album is a timely, poetic statement. ‘The Iceberg’ is out February 24 on Mello Music Group.
Lead single “Things” acts as a mission statement for the album, a deep dance groove with lightning-quick lyrics about “things” he’s going through. Says Oddisee, “"We all go through the trials & tribulations of life. Why is it we feel the need to individualize our shared experiences? If only we could see our concerns as others do, maybe they wouldn't be so serious."
‘The Iceberg’ was recorded and produced by Oddisee at his own studio in Brooklyn, made with live instrumentation performed by Oddisee and members of his band, Good Compny.
Oddisee has released two studio albums, several EPs mixtapes and instrumental albums, and has over 23 million plays on Spotify. He’s been profiled by NPR, the Washington Post, praised by Pitchfork and Stereogum, performed on NPR’s Tiny Desk, Red Bull Sound Select and at festivals including Glastonbury and Sasquatch. ‘The Iceberg’ follows two releases in 2016, the ‘Alwasta EP’ and the instrumentals album ‘The Odd Tape.’ His 2015 full-length ‘The Good Fight’ was a Top 10 album on the iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap chart and he won the iTunes Music award for Best Hip-Hop Album of 2012.

Shon Roka (pronounced Shaun Roca) the DJ also known as Shaun Ortega was born on the west-side of Chicago. He started gaining fame as a bboy in 1991 and later became a member of a well known crew called the BRICKHEADZ. He would perform for such artist and events such as The Roots, KRS One, Immortal Technique, Dougie Fresh, Common, Rhymefest, Cypress Hill, Pharoah Monch, Nas, Diddy, Mariah Carey, Taste of Chicago, Lollapolooza, Looptopia, B96 Summer Bash just to name a few. The BRICKHEADZ also won many breakin' competition nationally and internationally. While Shon Roka was being active as a bboy he was working on his craft of being a DJ.
DJing for w/ Nike, Jordan, Under Armour, Adidas, Vans, Uprise (Chicago) Skateshop for numerous in-stores, sporting events, galleries and corporate outings. Also Shon Roka is a resident DJ post Covid in Chicago at McGee's, Tantrum, Imbibe and Harbee's. While being a DJ, he has been teaching music production and the Art of Skateboarding through Maggie Daley's After School Matters. Also known as Gallery 37.

The Odd Tape is technically the former-there are no vocals-but if you call this an instrumental album, you might as well say the same about Bitches Brew.
After a decade making music, the Prince Georges, Md.-raised and Brooklyn-based has transcended influences, comparisons and genre. The Odd Tape showcases the range of a composer bending hip-hop, soul, and jazz into singular form, tapping into that same emotional Fort Knox that animates all wordless choruses.
The Odd Tape revolves around the rhythms of the artist's daily life. It starts in the morning with "Alarmed," that sounds like if Shuggie Otis did a psychedelic eye-opening cover of Nas' "Shootouts." It rolls through "Right Side of the Bed," with its glitter-gold sax lines, loose drums, and sunshine-slanting-through-the-blinds keyboards. Oddisee went from sampling to creating the eternal sounds of his original inspirations. You can hear older gods like Roy Ayers, Bob James, and Fela, but mostly you hear Oddisee continue to come into his own.
As Pitchfork described his previous album, 2015's The Good Fight: "the music feels distinctly international and unhindered, far removed from the straight-ahead boom-bap he used to make. He's always created on his own terms, but [this] feels like a hearty "fuck you" to prevailing groupthink and the industry's creative limitations."
But this record marks another ascension. It glides, meditates, and simmers from "Alarmed" to "Still Sleeping." The soundtrack to his coffee in the morning, a trip to the corner store for fresh groceries, producing in the afternoon, cruising his bike through the city for inspiration, late afternoon song writing, stepping out into the evening with friends, hookah on the rooftop in Brooklyn, and settling into the dream world again. This is the Odd Tape, life as you've never heard it before.

About The Album
Finale needed to live. Such a fundamental and basic idea often gets overlooked in the fast food mentality of popular culture. You can make music without something to say, but it rarely lasts. The records that stick with us are usually those with a deeper understanding of the complexities of life: every day choices we make, those selfish and selfless acts that comprise our daily existence.
Odds and Ends captures those elemental contradictions. Produced entirely by Oddisee, it marks Finale’s return following a half-decade hiatus. In that span, the Detroit stalwart took a break to experience growth in his life. He came to terms with his place in the world, endured regrets, and wrote relatable stories about himself, and those around him.
On paper, this might sound like a sensitive mellow lazy summer record. The exact opposite is true. Odds and Ends hits like a pipe bomb. It’s as hard as the galvanized steel at the Motor City factories that used to employ Finale. “Choppy Waters” is a rattling slapping sheep-eviscerating rant over a 64-bit video game beat. The production on “Cut Day” sounds made for an intergalactic space brawl, but the lyrics paint a picture of contemporary woes (no Drake).
You feel the hunger pangs, the derision for fools, and the looming specter of death. This is hard-nosed, guard-your-grill, chop-down-the-roster Detroit hip-hop—rap in serrated and raw form. As Finale says himself: forget all that extra shit, just spit.
There’s an almost apocalyptic vibe that matches the wreckage of the most abandoned parts of the city. But there’s also the unusual warmth that only Oddisee’s production can supply. It’s like Showbiz & AG or Jaylib updated to contemporary times and folded into the DMV producer’s own syncopation and singular chop style. Meanwhile, Finale tells sagas of dead-end jobs, incompetent bosses, political frustrations, and fears of the world that his son will grow up in.
Cameos occur from a-alikes Homeboy Sandman and Bilal Salaam, Kenn Star and Big Tone, but the show belongs to Finale—back from hiatus, rapping like he’s ripping shoulders out of sockets. Pitchfork said about his last album, 2009’s, A Pipe Dream and A Promise: “there are so few MCs working today who are able to carry this much of an album on their own.” Since then, Finale’s only mastered the art and refused to allow it to be disposable.
This is a record for the family that he gained and the friends, collaborators and leeches that stuck around when he didn't have anything left to give. It’s for ones lost along the way while he tried to find something more than what he had to begin with. This isn’t the same Finale. Struggle and success seep through every word. It’s music on its own terms. He picked the mic back up and shut the competition down

Oddisee says: "Belong to the World" is a song about making a transition from feeling like i didnt fit it to anything, into understanding we belong to everything. It is a song about understanding that the world is bigger than the small things we want to be a part of.
About the video:
Director Zack Kashkett worked to provide a sense of isolation and introspection that often accompanies the physical and metaphorical idea of being inside and alone juxtaposed against spacious shots of Oddisee within the larger world outside. The sense of isolation goes away when the scope gets large enough and the world's size becomes encompassing not enclosing. This is similar to the sense one gets when they realize they are part of something greater.

The song explores the counterproductive nature of some relationships that end up draining those involved. In order to visually represent this idea director Brandon Black and Director of Photography Zack Schamberg filmed Oddisee walking backwards throughout multiple boroughs in New York over several nights. Then they reversed the footage to make everyone else move backwards. Next the director shot the footage at night but boosted the light to appear as though it was day in order to add to the disorienting affect, making night seem like day, and forward seem like backwards.

Oddisee and Phonte's | Requiem | New Music
Mello Music Group is currently preparing their annual compilation project, and today, they debut the first single, "Requiem," from Oddisee and Phonte. Over some funky production from Oddisee himself, the conscious track focuses on the recent struggles of society, particularly the killing of unarmed black men by police, as they mention, "Anything from candy to cigarettes can get a n***a killed," which is reference to the death of Eric Garner.
The album, titled Persona, is currently available for pre-order on iTunes and on the Mello Music Group Website before its release on March 10, and is set to also feature appearances from Ras Kass, Rapper Big Pooh, Kool Keith, Apollo Brown, and more. The stars of the present teamed with timeless innovators like Phonte (Little Brother), Blockhead, Ras Kass, Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), Oh No, Masta Ace, and Bilal Salaam. The result is something that binds current greats with the pioneers who paved the asphalt. It’s both a historical moment and hard as hell.
If most compilations are nothing more than a loosely thrown together collection of songs, Persona boasts meticulous focus. These aren’t spare tracks, they’re potent messages and poisonous darts. “Requiem” finds Phonte and Oddisee indicting American racism and Xenophobia with fury and precision. On “Homicide,” yU and Nottz leave blood dripping all over the canvas. There’s “Reductionist Prayer,” where Open Mike Eagle lampoons fundamentalists and religious zealots over Oddisee’s warm Stevie Wonder keyboards.
But there’s ultimately no need to do the track-by-track breakdown. This is an anthology in the most traditional well-curated sense. Turn here if you want to find the best hip-hop artists of their generation in raw and unfiltered form. The bars are brimstone; the beats force your neck to swivel. Through all the discontent, rays of hope begin to emerge. If you remember the feeling you got when you first heard Soundbombing, stop searching. Stream Diamond District’s ‘March On Washington Redux’ LP
Diamond District dropped the full stream of their March On Washington Redux LP today. The 13-track collection from Uptown XO, yU and Oddisee features a reworking of their album, March On Washington (released just a few months ago, and including some of their best marathon music) by such producers as Large Professor, Apollo Brown, and Nottz. The lyrics are kept in tact while tracks like “Working Weekends” (remixed by Large Pro) re-captures the mood of these times, and cuts like “Ain’t Over” smooth out the urgency of the original (this one done with a touch of Black Milk).

He started gaining fame as a bboy in 1991 and later became a member of a well known crew called the BRICKHEADZ. He would perform for such artist and events such as The Roots, KRS One, Immortal Technique, Dougie Fresh, Common, Rhymefest, Cypress Hill, Pharoah Monch, Nas, Diddy, Mariah Carey, Taste of Chicago, Lollapolooza, Looptopia, B96 Summer Bash just to name a few. The BRICKHEADZ also won many breakin' competition nationally and internationally. While Shon Roka was being active as a bboy he was working on his craft of being a DJ.
DJing for w/ Nike, Jordan, Under Armour, Adidas, Vans, Uprise (Chicago) Skateshop for numerous in-stores, sporting events, galleries and corporate outings. Also Shon Roka is a resident DJ post Covid in Chicago at McGee's, Tantrum, Imbibe and Harbee's. 20SYL FT. ODDISEE | ONGOING THING
So often we get caught up in the monotonous sounds of hip-hop. We hear the same boom bap, trap, and wack rap on a daily basis, and are only infrequently entertained with an effort that actually comes across our good creative graces. Some artists are better than others at putting out the kind of quality rap (and instrumentals behind them) on a consistent basis, though, and two individuals who’ve been putting in this outstand work are 20syl and Oddisee, who each happen to appear on this unbelievably tantalizing track of theirs entitled “Ongoing Thing”.
The effort is one that comes off 20syl’s upcoming On And On Records-released Motifs EP (out June 9th), and it’s one that’s going to build all the buzz needed to get yourself and others interested in the greater body of work. From 20syl’s varied vocal modulations, synths, and instrumentations, to Oddisee’s cooly calculated raps, to the enthralling atmosphere that’s birthed as a result of them both, “Ongoing Thing” excites. The skaters featured in the video are from a crew called "Hammer City".
Hammer city is a collective of skaters who all live near or in the neighborhood on 14th street in Long Beach California. The crews founder was a skater named Michael Green A.K.A Blacc. Mike was gunned down in 2005 over a case of mistaken Identity. Needless to say, 14th street is not a conducive environment for skating, drugs and gangs shadow the landscape but n the middle of out all the kids found an escape, they found refuge in a park they dubbed "Ghetto Park" which later became know as "The Michael K. Green Skate Park."
Featured in the video are three members from Hammer City: Juice, E.C., and ManMan (Blacc Mike's brother).

Mandala Vol. 1, Polysonic Flows is the fourth Mello Music Group compilation.
With ten distinctive producers behind the boards, the soundscapes on Mandala Vol. 1, Polysonic Flows cover the map and the album is all the better for it. Oddisee of course helms the opener and tracks throughout with a musicality like few in Hip-Hop today. L'Orange brings subtle, jazzy suites to the table, and Quelle Chris provides dusty samples looped over hard-hitting drums as well as anyone else on the record. Jeremiah Jae also makes sure the bass-rattling, electronic bangers coming out of L.A.'s beat scene are well represented. Nothing here is solely run-of-the-mill boom-bap. Each beat is far richer and more inventive, able to play on its own and provide the perfect complement to the raps at hand.
