Beatport Launching Free Streaming Service

Online dance music retailer Beatport is set to relaunch in 2015 with a focus on streaming, introducing a free ad-supported service to compliment its online store. Beatport was established back in 2004, but the relaunch comes after the service was purchased in 2013 by Robert F.X. Sillerman’s SFX entertainment,

While SFX is still negotiating with major labels Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Warner Music Group over the streaming plans, about 90% of the retailer’s database comes from smaller independent labels, so it’s not terribly important to get the majors board.

Since DJs constitute a majority of Beatport’s customer base, the download store will still continue under the Beatport Pro umbrella.

The new Beatport will also provide “event information, artist profiles, and potentially live-streamed performances,” in an effort to consolidate SFX’s network of sites.

Spooky Black took to Twitter yesterday to announce the coming of his new song, and it turns out he's a man of his word. The "Without You" crooner has unveiled a new song featuring production by WeDidIt's Shlohmo and D33J as well as thestand4rd's Bobby Raps and Psymun, and the song is also under Spooky Black's birth name, Corbin. "Worn" is the first solo Spooky Black/Corbin song we've heard since the release of the Leaving EP back in summer, and may very well end up being the last new song we hear from him before the year ends. Willow Smith — the 14-year-old daughter of Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, and mystical Mother Earth — has been the recent subject of derision. Alongside her brother, Jaden, she waxed philosophic in an interview for T Magazine about paranormal life energies, illusive properties of time, and how much school sucks. The pair were ridiculed for every line. It’s fun to mock New Age aphorisms and it’s fun to mock teens. Feel-good fuzz told with posturing confidence is an irresistible combination to deflate.

What We Really Talk About When We Talk About Doofy Teens is self-deprecation for our past lives as teens. And this specific type of teen — this wide-eyed junior philosopher excited about lofty mental rubrics for considering the world — is ripe for teasing.

But if Willow is slightly ribbed, she should also be praised. She's confident, ambitious, creatively motivated: Why deride these wonderful qualities? It's kind of fantastic to use a standard publicity interview to talk over sky-scraping ideas about existence. In every conversation, she mentions a new way of thinking: a refreshing substitute for peppery anecdotes or false humility. Ghanaian Afro-Soul Singer Jojo Abot Performs 2 Songs Off Her Forthcoming EP Debut, ‘Fyfya Woto’



Ghanaian afro-soul songstress was in the midst of readying her debut EP, Fyfya Woto, a conceptual project produced by Copenhagen’s Jonas Rendbo which will focus on “a woman’s right to choose.” While we await news of an official release date, Abot has previewed two new singles off the record in the form of live videos filmed at Copenhagen’s Millfactory Studios with Abot and her three-man band.

The eclectic singer cites South African reggae icon Lucky Dube as one of the musical influences that shaped the making of Fyfya Woto, and the first track “To Li” bears witness to this influence as Abot spits in Ewe and English over a midtempo reggae groove. On “Pi Lo Lo” (named for the Ghanaian children’s game similar to hide and seek) Abot shows off her vocal versatility over a slow-burning electronic beat anchored by ethereal synths while exploring the risks of infidelity and the consequences that come with openly expressing a forbidden love. Alo Wala - Timbuktu (feat. The Clerk) | Cityboy

A monster of a song, “Timbuktu” by rising global bass rapper / group Alo Wala melds into all sorts of moods–calm, jumpy, even forlorn. Opening with a small percussive swirl of taps, jangles, and pings, the song suddenly stops: “Here we go/See me flow/’Round and ’round I go,” the project’s Chicago-born, Copenhagen-based vocalist Shivani Ahlowalia (aka Alo Wala) starts in her candied voice, hand claps and drum bangs circling under her. Strings and a cascade of muffled electronics then crash hard as she continues, “I rolled through Timbuktu a long long time ago, I got my people and fresh heat no matter where I go.”

As it turns out, Ahlowalia spent time in a different part of West Africa: Guinea-Bissau. It was there that she co-founded the country’s first quality recording studio. Prior to the professional Cobiana studio being built, Bissau-Guinean artists would need to travel to Lisbon or Paris for quality recording sessions, Ahlowalia says. “I worked very hard in particular on a project called Hip Hop Harmony,” a program that brought her to Senegal, The Gambia, Mali, Mauritania and Morocco, to work with regional unification through hip-hop. After joining with tropical bass group Copia Doble Systema and VJ Mad Es to become a full band, Ahlowalia / Alo Wala toured India earlier this year, and went on to play shows in Morocco (at L’Boulevard Festival– more on this to come on Okayafrica) and Russia. This Monday, the group is set to release their debut EP, Cityboy, which closes with “Timbuktu.” Speaking on her connection to the Malian city the song takes its name from, Ahlowalia explained:

“It’s a common expression to say ‘from here to Timbuktu,’ Timbuktu referring to a place far away, almost intangible or impossible to arrive to. So what happens when you’ve been there to the impossible place so very far away? Where do you go from there? That’s what the tune is about. For me Timbuktu represents the turning point, where the journey becomes less about a destination, and more about knowing one’s self; the journey within.”

There's 7 Wonders of the World. An 8th wonder was always a question to people. I feel like my mind state & where I'm from(Baltimore, MD) is that 8th wonder that people don't get to see that often. My creation is a thing in it's own, which I like to call "8th World".
What you hear is what it is, man. Just some good ol' stories told on good ol' production, good ol' vibes, good influences, bad influences & all of what you can ask for from a nigga coming from East Baltimore, but has seen more than just that. Its just me. I put my thoughts, personality, my hometown, places i been & experiences into this project. I also had some great features from my homie & ace from VA, D.R.A.M. & Baltimore-based singer, Chrissy Vasquez, along with some cool ass bonuses. Enjoy.

thestand4rd—a meeting of midwestern R&B misfits Psymun, Bobby Raps, Allan Kingdom, and Spooky Black—have released their Doc McKinney-produced and DJ Khaled-blessed self-titled debut album. In their recent GEN F profile, the group describes their collaborative work as "the most natural shit ever" despite the differences in their solo work, and that manifests tiself in the ease with which they shift between genres—in particular, hip-hop, R&B, and ambient electronic. "I don't know the last time you saw four individual artists from different sides of the spectrum and from the same town come together," Bobby explains. ACTION BRONSON X BLACK ATLASS X PARTY SUPPLIES | THE LIGHT IN THE ADDICT

It’s no secret that Action Bronson shines on any beat provided to him by indie producer Party Supplies – just look at the strength of Blue Chips, Volumes 1 & II, or his recently released “Easy Rider,” from Bronsolini’s forthcoming debut studio LP, Mr. Wonderful. It is with great pleasure that we present another collaboration from the two, a jazzy, beautifully orchestrated, piano-driven number called “The Light in the Addict.” The producer’s Fool’s Gold labelmate Black Atlass also appears to provide a verse. While it certainly sounds like a melancholy affair, Party Supplies told Billboard that it’s the “sound of hope and survival and the crossroads of good and bad.” Hear it below:

Live, the band are a blur of lipstick, rock hard riffs and attitude, with The Franklys coming across as four female Holden Caulfields in the process.
