Few things are more ugly or heroic than telling the truth. Life is often bleak, brutal, and over all too swiftly. Leaders are corrupt. Job prospects are limited. Cigarettes and shots of gin rarely lead to a peaceful finish. But between the lunacy and squalor, there exists those who make it all worthwhile: family, friends, and ruthlessly honest artists who remind you that you aren’t alone, shedding light on those dark nights of the soul.
As Michigan’s anti-Surgeon General, Red Pill quips: “We may not be the heroes this world needs, we're definitely not the heroes this world wants, but at least we're here.” His partners in Ugly Heroes are Chicago MC Verbal Kent, and Detroit producer Apollo Brown. Their sophomore Mello Music Group release, Everything In Between, offers diamonds of wisdom amidst the existential dumpster fire.
It’s been said that if you go down deep enough, past the personal, you eventually reach the universal. Ugly Heroes embody that axiom, unraveling their own stories, self-doubts, and bouts with depression to arrive at something as profound as it is vulnerable. Apollo Brown warps soul music and bayonet-hard drums, creating a singular form of soul-coughing dirty-sky symphonies. Levitating boom-bap for the 21st Century.
“Have you ever figured what you’d be like in a few years…why don’t you look ahead” A cinematic voice opens up “Today, Right Now,” with these words, doubling as a manifesto for things to come. Just as quickly, a voice retorts, “ah, don’t preach at me…as if you can tell what you’ll be like in a few years.”
The back-and-forth distills the questions at the core of the record: What will my future look like? How can I repair myself? What gives my life meaning? What do we do in a world where the right answers are frequently hidden and the wrong answers are all too obvious?
Red Pill, Verbal Kent, and Apollo Brown refuse to offer simple solutions, but instead created a life-affirming record with a dark undercurrent. Red Pill calls us “rational cattle” one moment, while Verbal half-jokingly insists on the importance of “grabbing the bull by its arms” in the next. They’re artists and brothers and fathers grappling with the impossible: how to extend the good moments indefinitely, how to eradicate the bad ones to protect themselves and the ones they love.
They might harbor the suspicion that the past, present, and future might all be the same, but they understand that acts of heroism are often found in minor gestures. In a frivolous world, Ugly Heroes prove that talent will always reign supreme and honesty can never become obsolete.

Red Pill | Instinctive Drowning | Music Video
Red Pill says that he wanted the song and video, which shows him being ignored by guests at a party as if he was invisible, to “play on this idea that depression and substance abuse isn’t always easy to point out. Cries for help aren’t always obvious.”
It's not often the art we put out is as heavy as this. Red Pill, known for being filthy honest, has taken it to a new level and created something so intimate it hurts to watch knowing this is his life. Red Pill is more than an actor and this is more than a script - this is the baggage he carries. As a label all we can do is thank him for his honesty in art and shed a tear for one of the most heart wrenching lyrical displays we've ever heard. For all those going through the pain of addiction, loss, or anything else, we offer this merely to let you know there are so many out there who get it, who are living through it with you from a far.

Red Pill | Look What This World Did To Us | Mellow Music Group
"Look What This World Did To Us." The command is rhetorical. You're already aware of the echo, the generational discontent and alienation, the whispered and denied calls for absolution. No need to look around, just check your bank account and sigh-or echo Biggie and scream, "fuck the world."
Or melt into the couch and absorb Red Pill's debut for Mello Music Group-a novel disguised as an album, a surly hymn from poisoned lungs. It's a confirmation of what John Cage once declared: "all great art is a form of complaint."
Or maybe the better comparison is Bukowski, memorializing the "broken factory windows of emptiness." That makes more sense in Ferndale, Michigan where Red Pill calls home. After college graduation, "Leonard Letdown" started working at a machine shop. A temporary gig turned into a labor daze. The dream of converting music into rent money seemed more elusive by the day.
Depression compounded. The empty packs of cigarettes turned into cellophane towers. The whiskey mixed with an absence of hope. This album is a signal flare, an escape route, and catharsis. This isn't just hip-hop, this is an attempt to distill the disillusion and cure the hangover. It's both a brilliant mission statement and a jazzy funeral for what was promised but never delivered.
This is for those who played by the rules only to discover that the game was rigged. This is a toast for those entering their late 20s and still acting like adolescents. It's an anti-Valentine to marriage and mortgages. It offers empathy for those buried under student loan and credit card debt, but who refuse to sink. Even if the smoke rings appear like nooses, this is an artful rebuttal to the nihilism.
Your favorite song will be determined by what theme you relate to most. Look What This World Did To Us is in league with the best of early Atmosphere or Open Mike Eagle's Dark Comedy, a modern hustle of machinery and migraines. A commemoration of going a quarter century without a foundation and an acknowledgement of the nerves that accompany a future built atop fault lines. These are the late night conversations you have with your friends. The idle nights and empty bottles, the hard questions that come after you realize the world might not be yours.

While being a DJ, he has been teaching music production and the Art of Skateboarding through Maggie Daley's After School Matters. Also known as Gallery 37.

While West Coast legend Ras Kass was recently in Detroit with Apollo Brown they called together some low key D legends - MarvWon, Noveliss of Clear Soul Forces, Miz Korona, and MMG's own Red Pill of Ugly Heroes. Director Jay Brown captured the whole thing, and put together this 6 minute highlight of the late night session.

L’Orange ft Red Pill | Entering The Silence
In the aftermath of L'Orange's 2014 album The Orchid Days, the After The Flowers EP is a warm vignette- a glimpse into life after the end of the world. Waking up to a surreal heavenscape, our tragic figure searches for his place somewhere between life and death.
Expanding on the themes of love and loss, L'Orange teams up with artists Chuck Inglish, Meyhem Lauren, Red Pill and producer Amerigo Gazaway to bring us a stream of consciousness epilogue to his 2014 album The Orchid Days.

Ugly Heroes | Naysayers & Playmakers
After Ugly Heroes' 2013 classic self titled LP, Apollo Brown, Verbal Kent and Red Pill are back again with a new EP coming out August 19th. The new EP features five new songs (including a Murs feature) and 4 bonus track b-sides. Ugly Heroes will also being touring Europe for a few weeks this August, starting with the legendary Hip-Hop Kemp Festival before hitting London and a number of other spots (all the dates will soon be up on the MMG Event Calendar). The new EP will first be available digitally with a vinyl edition to follow late in the year. Original artwork by illustrator Paul Grelet.
