Working 9-foot TR-909 drum machine goes on display

9ft-909 – Initial sound check from RAY on Vimeo.

Find out how this oversized beatbox works.

It has a big sound, and Roland’s TR-909 drum machine has certainly left a large sonic footprint on the history of electronic music, so it’s perhaps appropriate that Edinburgh-based arts collective Ray is celebrating 30 years of the instrument by creating an oversized 9-foot replica.

Six times the size of the original, this playable sculpture, designed by project leader Brendan McCarthy, has a tensile steel and aluminium frame supporting a wooden outer shell. It can be assembled and taken apart in minutes, but is said to be tough enough to take a beating.

The guts of the machine, which were assembled by Sam Healy (of psych-rock groups North Atlantic Oscillation and Sand), recreate part of the original 909’s interface using off-the-shelf Roland gear. There are a dozen PD-8 drum trigger pads fitted under the spring-loaded buttons, which feed into a TD-12 drum brain.

This in turn sends MIDI data to an Aira TR-8. When interacted with, the sculpture not only pounds out 909 sounds via the TR-8, but also relays the MIDI data to a projection system synchronised to the beat. The more complex the rhythm, the more intricate the visuals.

The result, according to Ray is: “A hands-on behemoth wired for sound and vision. An interactive monument to electronic music.”

The 9-foot 909 is appearing at this weekend’s Green Man festival, and will also be at Bestival on 4 to 7 September. You can see it in action in the video above.

JAPANESE MONK TATSUMI MIXES FROM HIS HOSPITAL BED

 photo 0b18ebce-1bcb-4e5c-b82f-77c9d5646c5c_zpsfcf4663c.jpg

The only limitations are those you set for yourself.

This past Aprli FACT covered the fascinating and sad story of Tatsumi, a Japanese monk who is also apt at scratching, beatboxing and skateboarding.

Tatsumi was one of the central characters in the documentary KanZeOn, a meditation on buddhism and sound, that has been praised for its unique angle and storytelling. Earlier this year the makers of the documentary reached out to let us know that Tatsumi had completed an album, a staggering journey through eletronic music, as well as sharing the news that he had been diagnosed with a serious illness.

Following on from Joe Muggs’ interview with Tatsumi, we have a video preview of a mix he completed while in hospital, performed entirely from his bed. The mix is intended as a thank you for all the support Tatsumi has received so far. Despite its setting the video also affirms it is possible to stay upbeat while undergoing chemotherapy. And as a comical side note, apparently on the other side of the dividing curtains you can see in the video were three men in their 80s wondering what the hell was going on.

You can watch the mix preview below and head over to Soundcloud to stream and download it. There is also a full length video of the mix.

In addition you can also stream and download an exclusive non album track, ‘distance’, beneath the video. Tatsumi’s album, Travel Through Worlds is released on Bandcamp on June 21st. There are already two album tracks available if you want to hear more.

#TGIF A-Trak x Milo & Otis | Out The Speakers ft. Rich Kidz

When DJ superhero A-Trak joins forces with vanguard production duo Milo & Otis, lock up your stereo equipment...NO BASS IS SAFE. Their irresistibly anthemic collaboration "Out The Speakers" is the first official team-up from these two festival forces (following M&O's beloved remix with Skrillex and Kill The Noise of Trizzy's Duck Sauce single "NRG"). They slow down the BPMs to make a speaker-bursting, apartment-evicting monster constructed from screwed rap vocals from ATL's Rich Kidz, twerked out drums, and what is perhaps mankind's first recorded "burp drop." Tweeters beware!

Blaqstarr | Gangsta | Blaq-Files

The Blaq-Files is out on 1/23 on Jeffree's / Mad Decent!

Blaqstarr is back! Prep yourself for the release of The Blaq-Files with an early free download of a Blaqstarr classic, "Gangsta!"

We've dusted off 4 of the heaviest unreleased tracks from the Supastarr era here and brought them into the light with brand new mixing and mastering. You might have come across these over the years but these new versions are super crisp and loud, doing justice to four classic tracks that were previously only available as low quality mp3s. Lose your mind all over again with "Hands Up Thumbs Down", "Lemme Hump You", "I Can Feel It In The Air" and "Slide To The Left."

The Last HI-NRG Ravers in Mexico

Every other Friday is Hi-NRG night at the Patrick Miller club in Colonia Roma, Mexico City. The night celebrates a type of disco with an electronic sound and a high-speed beat that was popular worldwide in the 80's. Although the form's worldwide popularity has ebbed, in Mexico City it is still alive, and its fans continue dancing to it in an almost religious way.

In 1983 Robeto Devesa, a Mexican DJ better known as Patrick Miller, started organizing parties in downtown Mexico City's Journalists Club. He imported the latest hits before anyone else, and the parties became mythical. Patrick turned into a character and a legend, adored by fans who danced weekly to the Hi-NRG rhythms; and his name became synonymous with epic raves. This is why Patrick Miller's followers, who call each other Patricios, have managed to keep this style of music alive, despite its being consider old fashioned in the countries in which it originated.

In the early 90's, Devesa decided to search for a permanent home to foster his sounds, lights, and lasers. Thus he founded the Patrick Miller club, which opens its doors every Friday in Colonia Roma to let parishioners dance like the gods.

We went with Jorge, better known as Padawan, to the house where he meets with his buddies—other members of the Banda Loca—before heading to their favorite club. Then we travelled with them to the Patrick Miller club, to better understand what makes Hi-NRG nights way more than just a regular disco party.
