Mizan | Thru
NY-based Mizan is a relatively new songwriter and vocally-gifted musician who has released her debut Dark Blue EP, and is one by one unveiling each track off this nuanced release. Setting ahead the goal of creating and working by her own convictions, based on her Ethiopian upbringing, Mizan’s strong character has allowed her to define her individual emotive sound.
The third single off her Dark Blue EP is the deep, dusk-flavoured “Thru” and never could a title of an EP be so fitting for the musical tone of its tracks. Mizan creates an urban dreamscape of synthesised beats and minimal keyboard accompaniments, in which the upbeat motion of the track perfectly compliments Mizan’s soulful voice. While being softly-spoken, Mizan lyrically sounds at ease and confident, like a sort of metropolitan Sensei, philosophising and preaching about love, life and the universe.

BANKS | GODDESS
Banks announces debut album, Goddess, streams title track
Building on the momentum and success of her 2013 London EP, Los Angles songstress Banks is currently putting the final touches on her debut album Goddess for Harvest Records, due out on September 9th. Today she premiered its title track and lead single on BBC Radio 1xtra.
No stranger to shadowy netherworlds populated by sticky beats and even sultrier vocals — see the sweaty, Shlohmo-produced “Brain” — Banks weaves together yet another tantalizer for the late-night crowd with the help of London producer and SBTRKT affiliate Lil Silva. While it’s shrouded in dark atmospherics, the inspiration behind the song tells a more empowering story, one that according to Banks, permeates throughout most of her forthcoming LP.
“It’s so important for women to embrace themselves and feel like goddesses,” she said at a UK concert last month, right before debuting “Goddess” live. “The song’s called ‘Goddess’ because every woman is a f*cking goddess.” Amen to that. Listen in below (via NPR).
And catch Banks live on tour this spring:

The Roots | When The People Cheer
The Roots come back to us with a new cut, "When The People Cheer."
It's a good thing when we say that the brand new Roots joint sounds exactly how you would expect a Roots offering to sound like... amazing.
This song will appear on The Roots' next album, …And Then You Shoot Your Cousin. The album will serve as a follow up to their critically acclaimed album, Undun, in that both LP's will be conceptually minded. Meaning all of the tracks will be thematically related, telling a story of sorts as you progress through the album.
It's good to see The Roots back in the studio, as much as we like seeing them on late night TV. Check out the remix of their song, "The Fire," with B.o.B and John Legend on the track.

Nipsey Hussle | Freestyles, Speaks on "Crenshaw" Profit, & Reveals Single off "Victory Lap"
The walking blueprint for independent artists, Nipsey Hussle, has been making noise in the hip hop community by selling his free #Crenshaw mixtape for $100 a pop — and stopped by Sway in the Morning to talk all about it.
Nip's goal was to sell 1,000 copies of his project, and ended up exceeding his target. Jay Z even reached out and purchased 100 copies, along with Jeff Clanagan.
Although his support was overwhelming, Nipsey tells Sway that he received a lot of backlash, specifically from a radio station in Los Angeles.
"Contagious" says Nipsey. That's the book that inspired his proud2pay campaign. Now, what does he plan to do with the money he's received?
"Marketing," he says.
On a personal note, Nip opens up about his dating life. Tracy G asks him what his ideal girl is, and he responded by saying...
"My team is solid, but I'm single." Nip admits. "Somebody solid, honest sincere... more so, their spirit has to be in vibration with mine."
Nipsey's album, Victory Lap, is coming soon, and his first single, Rap Ni**as drops at the top of the year.
"It's not for radio, but it needs to be said." Hussle says, while describing his first single.
Following our Sway in the Morning tradition, we couldn't let this LA entrepreneur leave with out kicking a freestyle! Watch below as he lights the mic on fire.
"It's easy to tell 'garbage' music. Easy to tell 'great' records. The 'good' records are confusing."
