Rocky Dawuni | African Thriller

"African Thriller" is the first single from the African star Rocky Dawuni's new album "Branches of the Same Tree," which will be released in March 2015 on Cumbancha.

BUY ON ITUNES:
http://bit.ly/1rYzTnJ

"African Thriller," sung in West African pidgin English, embodies Rocky Dawuni's unique "Afro-Roots" sound, a funky blend of soul, pop, Afrobeat and reggae grooves that have made him a household name in his native Ghana and earned him a wide following across the globe. Jeremy Sole, a DJ, producer and host on the taste-defining Los Angeles radio station KCRW, remixed the single version of "African Thriller". Sole has previously remixed tracks for Femi Kuti, David Bowie, Thievery Corporation, and Quantic, among others.

Shot in Los Angeles, the highly polished music video, directed by Glen Wilson, and choreographed by Kara Mack, offers an explosion of West African inspired dance moves, rich colors, and a celebratory atmosphere. Wilson, who directed Dawuni's earlier "African Reggae Fever" video, was inspired by one of his favorite documentaries, When We Were Kings, which documented the famous Ali/Foreman "Rumble in the Jungle" bout that took place in Kinshasha, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo) on October 30th, 1974. The video also references Afro Funke', Rocky's world renowned cross cultural dance club in Los Angeles, and offers visual tributes to Nigerian Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti.

According to Rocky Dawuni, "'African Thriller' is a persona, a concept and a vision of what contemporary beauty and excitement will emerge from the confrontation and collision of cultures. The video hints at historical and cultural signposts in a metaphoric expression of how the dance floor is one of the ultimate and most colorful places for global unity, celebration and liberation."

Rocky Dawuni and his team are excited for this video to inspire others to "shake it till it go be hot, hot!" Rocky is asking fans to post their “African Thiller” inspired dance-videos to his Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/rockydawuni) and will soon be announcing an upcoming remix contest. Rocky Dawuni is a musician and humanitarian activist from Ghana, West Africa. Named one of Africa's Top 10 global stars by CNN, his recordings and thrilling live performances have attracted thousands to his concerts around the world at top festivals and prestigious venues such as The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Dawuni has collaborated and performed with Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, Bono, Jason Mraz, Janelle Monae and John Legend, among many others.

Dawuni's eloquence, cultural diplomacy and successful melding of music and activism have led him to become a passionate spokesperson for various global causes. He has joined forces with Product (RED), UNICEF, the Carter Center and the UN Foundation. In 2012, Dawuni was appointed the Tourism and Cultural Ambassador of Ghana and World Ambassador for the Musicians Union of Ghana. The same year, he was named a United Nations Foundation Ambassador for the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, alongside actress Julia Roberts and chef José Andrés.

Influenced by the soulful beats of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, the positive messages and deep grooves of Bob Marley and the infectious, sing-along anthems of Michael Franti, K'naan and Matisyahu, Rocky Dawuni's songs straddle the musical boundaries between Africa, the Caribbean and the US to create a universally appealing sound that unites generations and cultures.

AIR JORDAN 6 RETRO | FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP

WRITTEN BY: KEENAN HIGGINS/Green Label

Back in 1991, Michael Jordan took home his first NBA Championship when he and the Chicago Bulls defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in a game-changing Finals showdown. Jordan Brand pays tribute to that iconic moment with a special pair of the Air Jordan 6, appropriately titled the “First Championship” edition.

Aside from the crisp white base, these truly stand out for the icy sole and subtle speckled accents. Check out a few pics below, and let us know if you'll be checking for these when they drop later this year.

Doja Cat | Purrr! | EP

Doja Cat Drops Her New EP Purrr!

Doja Cat first caught our ears with “So High,” an eastern-influenced ode to the drug called love. Today, the Los Angeles singer releases her debut EP Purrr!, featuring a new relaxed standout “Control,” a breezy seaside joyride built on slow builds and wavy echoes. The EP features production from MNDSGN, and other aspirational LA beat nerds we’re checking for. Fans of Kali Uchis will dig Doja’s spacey singing style, but its when she dips into straight-laced rap that her project gets particularly ambitious. Stream her new EP below or cop it on iTunes today.

American Apparel fires controversial CEO

American Apparel founder Dov Charney was ousted Wednesday by the company in the wake of allegations of misconduct against him. In a statement on its website, the board said that it notified Charney of its intent to terminate his employment as president and CEO. He is expected to be fired following a 30-day period, the statement added.

John Luttrell, the company's executive vice president and chief financial officer, will step in as interim CEO. The board named Allan Mayer and David Danziger as co-chairmen to replace Charney as chairman of the board.

According to the statement, the "decision to replace Mr. Charney grew out of an ongoing investigation into alleged misconduct." "We take no joy in this, but the Board felt it was the right thing to do," said Allan Mayer,"Dov Charney created American Apparel, but the Company has grown much larger than any one individual and we are confident that its greatest days are still ahead."

Charney's tenure at American Apparel has been less than drama-free: In addition to various allegations of misconduct, AA's former CEO has faced a sex-slave lawsuit, undergone an immigration investigation, been threatened with bankruptcy, and has been long criticized for running the company's notoriously "racy" ads.

When asked in an interview with CNBC back in 2012 about the many lawsuits against him alleging inappropriate behavior, Charney said it was all par for the course: "That's also a testimony to my success, though, the fact that I'm a target for baseless lawsuits ... All the lawsuits that have been levied against me are baseless ... I'm not going to sit here and go through thousands of pages or something, but the allegations that I acted improperly at any time are completely a fiction."

According to the Los Angeles Times, a source familiar with the matter says, “[Charney]’s going to fight like hell to get this company back, but he won’t succeed."

Clint Dempsey of the U.S. soccer team recorded a hip-hop album.

Professional athletes have been recording albums for years now, with mostly horrific results. Clint Dempsey of the U.S. soccer team hopes to change that.

The Wall Street Journal, has the details:

Unbeknown to his fans and teammates, the 31-year-old Mr. Dempsey spent two weeks in Los Angeles during the off-season recording a 13-track album, “The Redux,” which he and his friend, the rapper XO, plan to release in the months ahead. Using his artist name “Deuce,” Major League Soccer’s highest-paid player raps about going from rags to riches, “banging Gs” (scoring goals) and being “Captain America.”

“We just were having fun with it and it ended up being an album,” said Mr. Dempsey, who collaborated with rappers and producers from his hometown of Nacogdoches, Texas. One of them, Mike Chehadé, said that if nothing else, the record could help make the U.S. team seem a little more intimidating.

“We’re not known as a soccer powerhouse—we’re almost known for being soft. But Clint has this edge,” he said.

This is no celebrity-athlete lark, apparently. Dempsey has been rapping for years. “He’ll just call you sometimes and start free-styling—he doesn’t even say hello,” Chehade told the Wall Street Journal.

The first single off the new album, “It’s Poppin,” drops Wednesday at 9 p.m. EDT at Deuceandxo.com, the Wall Street Journal reports. But for now, here’s Deuce’s 2006 efford, “Don’t Tread.”

BANKS | GODDESS

Banks announces debut album, Goddess, streams title track

Building on the momentum and success of her 2013 London EP, Los Angles songstress Banks is currently putting the final touches on her debut album Goddess for Harvest Records, due out on September 9th. Today she premiered its title track and lead single on BBC Radio 1xtra.

No stranger to shadowy netherworlds populated by sticky beats and even sultrier vocals — see the sweaty, Shlohmo-produced “Brain” — Banks weaves together yet another tantalizer for the late-night crowd with the help of London producer and SBTRKT affiliate Lil Silva. While it’s shrouded in dark atmospherics, the inspiration behind the song tells a more empowering story, one that according to Banks, permeates throughout most of her forthcoming LP.

“It’s so important for women to embrace themselves and feel like goddesses,” she said at a UK concert last month, right before debuting “Goddess” live. “The song’s called ‘Goddess’ because every woman is a f*cking goddess.” Amen to that. Listen in below (via NPR).

And catch Banks live on tour this spring:
