When Hit-Boy graced the stage of the legendary Watch the Throne World Tour in 2011, Jay-Z famously announced that Hit, producer of the Throne duo’s classic “N****s in Paris record, was the only guest artist to do so to that point. It was a hell of an honor, especially for a non-vocalist, which Hit still was at the time.
Since then, the IE Inland Empire native has gone on a massive tear, producing arena-rocking anthems for the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Big Sean, Drake, the late, great Nipsey Hussle and more. And he’s done it all without making the same beat twice.

Rhythm Roulette | Hit-Boy | Guitar Center Edition

Rhythm Roulette | Maaly Raw | Mass Appeal
Maaly Raw tried his hand at Mass Appeal’s famed #RhythmRoulette challenge. After strolling through New York City’s Good Records and selecting three albums at random, the Philly trap producer behind Lil Uzi Vert’s “Do What I Want” chops up a few beats on the spot. Utilizing the soundtrack to 1983's ‘The Big Chill’, John Cougar Mellencamp’s ‘Scarecrow’, and Oscar Peterson’s 'Put On A Happy Face' the young producer locks in and delivers three unique beats. How’d he do?

“To actually have stuff from [Dilla’s] vault is crazy.” Sango steps up to the plate in a special episode of Rhythm Roulette featuring Splice’s new Jay Dee aka J Dilla Sample Pack, which features drum sounds cut from the legendary Detroit producer’s Slum Village days. After selecting three albums at random from Seattle’s Holy Cow Records, the versatile producer enters the lab and crafted two beats just for us. Rhythm Roulette | Supah Mario | Mass Appeal
“I think I really did my thing picking these records dawg,” says Columbia, South Carolina producer DeMario Priester, aka Supah Mario, who recently pulled up to NYC’s Good Records and took the Rhythm Roulette challenge.
Digging through the crates blindfolded, the producer behind hits like Young Thug’s “Wyclef Jean” and “Ice Melts” a standout track off Drake’s ‘More Life’ stumbled onto some heat from James Taylor, GangStarr, and some old-school dancehall courtesy of the Dillinger vs. Trinity ‘Clash’ LP. “I told y’all this was gonna be some Jamaican vibes!” he exclaimed after the needle drop. But he ended up skipping the reggae together and finding some ill breaks on the James Taylor and the Original Flying Machine disc, adding some of his own keyboards to complete the beat.

Rhythm Roulette | Tom Misch | Mass Appeal
Tom Misch is a devotee of Dilla who’s been putting in work for years as a lo-fi SoundCloud producer. The South London singer and beatmaker self-produced most of his recent debut album ‘Geography,’ which features a rare lyrical cosign from Native Tongue OGs De La Soul. The last time he was in NYC, Misch accepted Mass Appeal’s Rhythm Roulette challenge, pulling up to Norman’s Sound & Vision in Williamsburg, Brooklyn to tie a T-shirt over his eyes and go groping for vinyl.
His random selections included ‘El Sabor De Gene’ by Gene Hernandez, as well as albums by the Panamanian vocalist Basilio and Hells Kitchen’s own Lisa Lisa. Wasting no time, Misch pulled the vinyl out, dropping the needle until he struck gold. Rhythm Roulette | DJ Mr. Rogers | Mass Appeal
DJ Mr. Rogers is a Houston mixmaster and radio personality who’s produced hits for Texas rap legends like Trae tha Truth and the Boss Hogg Outlawz. Wearing a DJ Screw jersey, Rogers pulled up to H-Town’s Cactus Music to accept the Rhythm Roulette challenge. “Might be a hidden gem,” said DJ Mr. Rogers as he flipped through randomly selected records by Stan Getz, Diana Ross, and Sarah Vaughn. After that it was straight back to the lab where DJ Mr. Rogers chopped up some smooth saxophone sounds, pitching it to perfection and adding wavy effects to brew up some Texas funk. Rhythm Roulette | Dame Grease | Mass Appeal
“I gotta get Funkadelic on em,” says Dame Grease, producer of crucial tacks for Mase, The Lox, and the whole Ruff Ryders camp. When Dame accepted Mass Appeal’s Rhythm Roulette challenge, we knew we were in for a treat. Although he and his protege Swizz Beatz are known for a mostly sample-free sound, the Harlem-born and Bronx-raised producer can chop with the best of them. “Every producer knows you can look at the grooves and see where they thin out at,” Grease said while surveying three randomly selected vinyl albums. “That’s where the breakdown’s at.” Working his way through ‘Spinners Live,’ Jose Feliciano’s ’10 to 23,’ and ‘Romantic Swing’ by Eugen Cicero, Grease zeroed in on Feliciano’s 1969 version of ‘By the Time I Get to Phoenix’ because he used to live in Phoenix. “Let’s go straight to that,” Grease said, dropping the needle. “Groovy! Rhythm Roulette | Chuck Strangers
Pro Era producer/rapper Chuck Strangers was “hungover AF” when he showed up to play Rhythm Roulette. Tying a bandana over his eyes, he set off on a groggy adventure through the aisles of NYC’s Good Records and selected three albums at random: The Impressions ‘Three the Hard Way,’ Charles Wright’s ‘Rhythm and Poetry,’ and ‘Songs’ by Bill Perry. Strangers, who’s been working with Joey Bada$$ & co since ‘1999’ mixtape days, recently released his own debut album ‘Consumers Park.’ Despite a torrential downpour and a hard night of drinking the night before he chopped up The Impressions to perfection. Rhythm Roulette | Carnage
“Vinyl & guacamole!” That’s how Carnage gets his creative juices flowing. Born and raised in Guatemala, Carnage grew up fascinated with producers like DJ Khaled and DJ Drama. He would go on to become a major player in the fusion of EDM sounds with vocals by hip hop artists like Lil Uzi Vert and Young Thug. But don’t get it twisted—Carnage can chop samples too, as he demonstrated when he accepted MASS APPEAL’s Rhythm Roulette challenge. Working with randomly selected albums by the Jacksons, Rick James, and Gladys Knight & The Pips, he got down to work chopping and cooking, pitching and reversing. Rhythm Roulette | Mike & Keys
“I don’t know about this one—this looks weird.” Such are the risks associated with accepting MASS APPEAL’s Rhythm Roulette challenge. But Mike & Keys knew what they were getting into when they zipped up the BAPE hoodie and snatched up three random records at Amoeba Music in Hollywood. Said albums—by Rick James, Heliocentrics, and David Armand & Friends—would form the building blocks for a brand new beat, created on camera. Hey, if anybody could pull it off these guys could!
Shaping the sound of Nipsey Hussle’s critically acclaimed ’Victory Lap’ album is only the latest career milestone for Money Mike and J-Keys. Formerly known as The Futuristiks, the production duo has been putting in work with A-List talent for well over a decade. In their earlier form they created soundtrack cuts for ‘The Fast & The Furious.’ With a discography that includes credits ranging from Future to Eminem, these two are no joke. Twisting and bending time as their heads nodded in synch while Michael Jordan highlights played on the studio monitors, Mike & Keys cooked up something amazing from a mixed bag of ingredients. Rhythm Roulette | Mr. Carmack
On the latest installment of MASS APPEAL's Rhythm Roulette, we've brought Los Angeles-based producer Mr. Carmack down to Good Records in Manhattan's East Village—blindfolded, picking up vinyls, you know the drill.
The Team Supreme affiliate, known for his groovy beats and signature dance-appropriate drums, pulled off the difficult challenge of producing a beat using merely the randomly selected records, which included Ester Phillips' 'For All We Know' LP and a Afro-Latin soul album by Mulatu Astatke and his Ethiopian Quintet.
Accompanied by San Francisco-based rapper and frequent collaborator Adam Vida, Carmack got right to work. He lifted some percussion from Mulatu Astatke and his Ethiopian Quintet, also sampling a couple others to kick out two beats—a ready-to-go Vida laid a rhyme over one of them.

Rhythm Roulette | Rahki
With Grammy Awards already under his belt already, Rahki is one of Top Dawg Entertainment's most trusted producers. The Minneapolis-born producer was the man behind "i," one of K-Dot's biggest singles, for which he sampled a '70s Isley Brother's track, "That Lady." Besides making beats for other members of TDE such as Ab-Soul, Rahki has produced for Eminem, 50 Cent, Travis $cott and more.
Rahki's ear for samples is so good, MASS APPEAL had to put him to the test in our latest episode of Rhythm Roulette. We met up with Rahki at Ameoba Music in L.A. where he tied on the blindfold and picked three records from the shop's clearance section. His picks were random as hell, including a chorus recording, orchestral music, and one album whose cover gave him "Illuminati type of vibes."
It seems those left-field selections posed just a small challenge for the talented beat-maker. What he came out with in the end is a banger. Check out Rahki at work in our latest Rhythm Roulette video above.

Rhythm Roulette | Daringer
On the latest episode of Rhythm Roulette, Daringer braves the bins at NYC’s Academy Records to blindly pull three records at random and test his production skills. Best known for his work with Buffalo MCs–and recent Shady Records signees–Westside Gunn and Conway, Griselda Records’ in-house producer didn’t flinch when faced with the folk and disco selects. Instead, he calmly sparked one and, with blunt in hand plus a special guest MC in the booth, cut another wavy gem.

Rhythm Roulette | P-Lo
Fresh after an interview with us and dropping his new album, 'More Than Anything,' Bay area producer-slash-rapper P-Lo pulled up to A1 Records in New York for today's "Rhythm Roulette." He submitted to our tradition of blindfold record digging and sample-based beat making with good humor, ending up with some Imperials, some Aretha Franklin, and some Iranian music.
After passing on the Iranian stuff as "too zeeky," P settled with thoughtful head-nodding on Aretha's powerful "Song For You." He threw the sample in reverse, pitched it up and went in. With hollow drums and skittering snares, a couple vocal percussive chops, and some bouncy ratchet keys, he flips the tune into true "collar popping music." At the end, he gives himself a shout. We give him a shout, too. Salute!

Rhythm Roulette | A$AP P On The Boards
"Hopefully I don't get no bullshit," says A$AP P on the Boards just before tying on the red bandana for the latest edition of Rhythm Roulette. One of the go-to beatsmiths for the A$AP Mob, P on the Boards was the man behind such Mob bangers as "Bath Salt" featuring Flatbush Zombies. His most recent work can be heard on the P on the DRGS project.
After roaming blindly through the bins at Academy Records, P came up with Red Crayola's abstract art rock album Malefactor Ade. The Aussie prog rock of Paternoster and QPSM Project featuring David Durah. Not the usual suspects to say the least.
After a dab of inspiration, P got down to work. He had high hopes for Red Crayola's "Baby Jesus Frog" based on the title, but revised his opinion post needle drop. He soon found a few suitable loops—ill interstellar outer-space shit, mostly—and got to chopping. Will he achieve his stated goal of cooking up six beats in one session? Only time will tell.
"Shouts out to MASS APPEAL for letting me get the opportunity finally," said P in closing, offering a few words of inspiration to up and coming producers: "It went from me watching this shit, to y'all watching this shit now. So keep doin' it!" Check the creative juices flowing up top...

Rhythm Roulette | Beat Butcha
It’s always entertaining to watch marquee production talent whip up impromptu instrumentals in episodes of "Rhythm Roulette," but an underrated aspect of our series is how much of a challenge it can pose. You never know what you’re going to pull out of the crates when you're blindfolded at the record store—and the results aren’t always optimal.
Herein lies the beauty of "Rhythm Roulette,' and Beat Butcha’s efforts in our latest episode. After blindly sifting through tons of records, Butcha emerged with “Midnight Energy” by Mantus—which “looks like it’s going to be some sort of disco shit”—Raphael Saadiq’s “Instant Vintage”—a gospel record that Butcha admitted would be a tough sample, despite its likely ‘dopeness’—and The Dells’ “There Is,” the record most likely to contain ‘the heat,’ according to the producer himself.
Producing records for grimy street poets like Prodigy, Lloyd Banks, Jadakiss and Sean Price during his career, Beat Butcha may not have deep experience dabbling in disco and gospel. But you wouldn’t know it by the way he whipped this track up. Enjoy the latest “Rhythm Roulette” above.

Rhythm Roulette | Tuxedo
Jake One and Mayer Hawthorne form like Voltron to become production duo Tuxedo, the latest contestants on MASS APPEAL's Rhythm Roulette. The pair stopped by Good Records—the shop, not the label—on East 5th Street in NYC, tied bandanas over their eyes, and grabbed up three random records to sample.
Although the soundtrack to Blue Thunder had them somewhat perplexed, they also came up with a 12-inch single by Logg, and the Gamble & Huff sure shot, MFSB's Love is the Message.
You already know Jake One's steez: from Chance the Rapper to 50 Cent, Drake, and Fun, the versatile Seattle beat smith gets it in wherever he feels. Hawthorne's light-hearted brand of blue-eyed soul has won him fans since his 2009 Stones Throw debut. Tuxedo's danceable tracks have an undeniable pop sensibility, they also show a heavy G-Funk and 80s electro influence, which shines through on the beat they built for us.
"We got the disco kick offa Log, the rest of the drums from MFSB, and kind of a dramatic sound offa the Blue Thunder soundtrack," said Hawthorne, who also added his soulful crooning to the sonic stew. "And that's how you craft a whompin'-ass banger, Tuxedo style."

Rhythm Roulette | Elite
Dreamville fame, at his favorite record store, A-1 Records in the East Village. He was subsequently blindfolded and instructed to pick out three records to sample at random. He ended up with selections from The Supremes, Barry White and Helen Schneider. Not bad, huh?
Elite echoed those sentiments once he reached the studio. “Barry White?” he said while examining the vinyl. “That’s a layup.”
Elite may have several J. Cole and Dreamville gems to his name, but his roots go much deeper. While an intern at Ruff Ryders back in the early 2000s, Elite grinded his way to a Cradle 2 the Grave soundtrack placement and a production credit on Jadakiss’ “Why” remix. Since then he’s helped bolster Cole’s discography with sturdy production, from the mixtapes to 4 Your Eyez Only.

Rhythm Roulette | Buda and Grandz
For this episode of Rhythm Roulette, Mass Appeal caught up with Buda and Grandz.
In this week’s edition of Rhythm Roulette we take it to the Bronx with Buda and Grandz who’ve produced hits for the likes of Dave East, JadaKiss, Wyclef, Talib KweLi, and The Game to name just a few.
You know the drill by now. We took the production duo to local a record shop, blindfolded them, and had them select three records. Then Buda and Grandz got right to it, blending together a medley of soulful samples with some tightly packed drums.
It’s safe to say that the duo chose to save their best for last, hitting us with a sultry saxophone number that is just massive.
