The 43-Year-Old Nike Cortez Returns in a Classic Colorway

Complex/BY PETE FORESTER

Every sneaker has its own particular culture surrounding it. Shoes have their stereotypes, and few have as much of a cultural identity as the Nike Cortez.

Originally created as a track shoe in 1972, with the guidance of Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman, the Cortez rose in popularity for its sports application before being adopted for its style as an alternative to the Air Force 1.

43 years later, Nike is set to relaunch the Cortez in a patriotic coloway, one of the originals. Featuring an upper of bright white leather, the broad, retro swoosh pops in Varsity Red, mirroring the heel. Varsity Blue streaks across the midsole, and an unfinished foam and nylon tongue grounds the retro look.

The Nike Classic Cortez is set to launch Saturday February 28, 10:00 EST for $100 – a price low enough that it seems as retro as the model itself.

AIR JORDAN 6 RETRO | FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP

WRITTEN BY: KEENAN HIGGINS/Green Label

Back in 1991, Michael Jordan took home his first NBA Championship when he and the Chicago Bulls defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in a game-changing Finals showdown. Jordan Brand pays tribute to that iconic moment with a special pair of the Air Jordan 6, appropriately titled the “First Championship” edition.

Aside from the crisp white base, these truly stand out for the icy sole and subtle speckled accents. Check out a few pics below, and let us know if you'll be checking for these when they drop later this year.

AIR JORDAN SPIZIKE | CEMENT/CLASSIC GREEN

BY: KEENAN HIGGINS/Green Label

Even though the sneaker community has been split on Jordan Brand’s Spizike mashup sneaker — which incorporates elements from the Jordan 3, 4, 5, 6 and 9 — the new release definitely has potential.

These are constructed with a Spike Lee-inspired motif in mind, using the director's classic Mars Blackmon character on the left heel and the 40 Acres And A Mule logo on the right.

You'll start seeing these beginning August 9 at Nike.com.

Pippen talks LeBron, failed Melo pitch

CHICAGO -- Chicago Bulls great Scottie Pippen doesn’t know what it’s like to lose in the NBA Finals, but he figures LeBron James learned a lesson in doing just that for a second time in four tries with the Miami Heat.

After judging the slam-dunk championship at the Nike Chi League all-star festivities Saturday, Pippen was asked if he was surprised James left for the Cleveland Cavaliers following Miami’s one-sided loss to the San Antonio Spurs in the Finals.

“I kind of figured he’d go back [to Cleveland],” Pippen said at Whitney Young High School. “I don’t know if he could hold that team up. I think [Dwyane] Wade's physical ability had him thinking, like, ‘Hey, maybe this is not the place I need to be.’ It was a great run for them. They weren’t as successful as they thought they would be, but you went to the Finals four times, so you can’t hold your head down too much about that.”

Six rings in six tries gives Pippen room for such backhanded praise.

While the Bulls reportedly had a meeting with James’ agent during this summer’s free-agency period, they failed at landing their true big target: Carmelo Anthony.

Pippen, now a special advisor to Bulls president and chief operating officer Michael Reinsdorf, was a major part of the pitch to Anthony.

After Pippen’s family pictures with Anthony from a Nike European summer tour elicited great hope in the Windy City, the Hall of Famer was part of the Bulls’ daylong Chicago presentation to Anthony on July 1.

But after all the wooing, Anthony stayed in New York and signed a $124 million deal to remain a Knick. The Bulls were reportedly his second choice. It's a familiar story for the Bulls, who haven't been able to land a major free agent in the post-Jordan-and-Pippen era.

“I’m not disappointed,” Pippen said. “Guys are going to make their decision at the end of the day, so you try to make a pitch, and hopefully it works. It hasn’t worked so far, but still, we did what we had to do as an organization to try and attract one of the best free agents out there.”

What was the pitch, given that Chicago couldn’t offer a max deal?

“'Look at the roster' -- that was pretty much it,” Pippen said. “We have a roster we think has a championship pedigree. We’ve been playing good basketball the last few years, even without our star player. Just adding some pieces was the pitch we were throwing at him. We felt that he was a big piece that we needed to get over the hump.”

As far as big pieces, Pippen said he likes the addition of 7-footer Pau Gasol, who had his introductory press conference Friday.

“We have size, and we got two big guys that can really pass the ball,” he said. “Pau gives us inside scoring that’s much needed. ... It’ll be great for our basketball team because we haven’t had a dominating low-post scorer in the block for a while.”

With James in Cleveland, Pippen said he thinks the Bulls have as good a chance as any team if Derrick Rose gets back to form.

“I think it’s wide open now, other than looking at San Antonio as the defending champion,” Pippen said. “I think a lot of teams have the opportunity to step up.”

Interview: Bata Shoe Museum Senior Curator Elizabeth Semmelhack

WRITTEN BY: BRAD CLARKE POSTED/GreenLabel

We recently visited the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto to check out their exhibit, Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture, to get schooled on the history of the sneaker. The exhibit was developed by Senior Curator of the Bata Shoe Museum, Elizabeth Semmelhack, who has worked at the museum since 2000 and has also consulted for other institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. We sat down with Elizabeth to find out more about how she developed the exhibit and the plans for its future.

How did you come up with the idea for Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture?
Historically, the Bata Shoe Museum hasn’t collected sneakers, yet sneaker culture is such an important part of the history of footwear today. I saw an opportunity to not only engage with the long history of the sneaker, but also bring it up to contemporary times and work with contemporary collectors. It was a really interesting opportunity. I’m always interested in why something has been made, and why the sneaker was invented in the first place is fascinating. Since we engage with all types of footwear, I think that hopefully this exhibit has expanded what people think we do here at the Bata Shoe Museum.

How many pairs of shoes are included in this exhibit?
There are about 130 pairs of shoes, and given that we don’t collect sneakers, it meant that there had to be a lot of participation from major archives and major collectors. Once the idea was out there, everyone really came on board. It was fantastic.

Who were some of the first people to reach out and contribute to the sneaker portion of this exhibit?
The first people I had to call were Run-DMC. I called them and Eric Blam, and immediately got a very positive response. I knew that was setting me off on the right foot. Christian Louboutin was also extremely willing to lend to the exhibition, and he actually donated to the museum’s collection. I also worked with Dionne Walcott from Toronto Loves Kicks, and she allowed us to look at local collectors and also expand into an international web of people. We got sneakers from around the world like Ponys from Hong Kong. I was so impressed by how enthusiastic everybody was to participate.

What’s the one shoe everyone talks about or focuses on in the exhibit?
There are a couple of really important shoes. Obviously, the fact that Nike designer Tinker Hatfield picked the shoes that defined his career is a really important contribution to this exhibition. For me, though, the ones I really love are the Stewie Griffin Nikes. I think they’re so beautiful and eye catching. They’re also a media darling. They’re very photogenic. [Laughs]

What’s next for the exhibition?
The American Federation of the Arts, which is based out of New York City, has taken on Out of the Box as a traveling exhibition, so we’re now in negotiations with a number of large museums across the United States. We’re hopeful that a major museum in the New York City area will exhibit it and that it will go all the way across America, ending on the West Coast. It should travel for about a year, there will be a book that accompanies it, and it will be updated to reflect the most recent sneakers as it moves across the United States

NYC Box Truck: Queens w/ Smart Crew

NYC Box Truck: Queens w/ Smart Crew

The international soccer community is in a frenzy this summer thanks to the massive convergence taking place in Brazil. This means folks from different countries, cities, and boroughs even— all over the globe— are at attention and in grand hopes of their team's road to victory. Queens, New York City isn't immune to the highly contagious fever. Considering that the borough is a melting pot of soccer-loving ethnic communities like Colombians, Jamaicans, Mexicans, Germans and Greeks, among others, it certainly won't be difficult to find locals gathered up at bars, restaurants, delis, or even in plain public, tuning in to the play-by-play of the latest match.

It was for this reason that the Queens-founded Smart Crew decided to make use of their special box truck canvas, provided by Nike NYC, to commemorate the spirit of the biggest soccer event on the planet. Formed circa 1997 by original members MEY, SYCO13, and LUK, the diverse squad has been gaining attention and strength since. They approach graffiti in a very collective and calculated manner that very much reflects, not only their name and iconic "S" with graduate cap emblem, but also the diverse unity found in soccer culture. The crew gets down like the teams get down!
