This guy is pretty much the embodiment of pure evil. Heck, for the majority of the movie, he’s not even an embodiment… just an evil evil all-seeing eye.

Lil Ze
City of God (2002)
First among villains that scared the sh*t out of us, since he’s an unpredictable monster in what’s not strictly a monster movie.

Max Cady
Cape Fear (1962 & 1991)
Max Cady is relentless, literally going to the ends of the earth for revenge. And he’s terrifying in the process.

The Joker
The Dark Knight (2008)
There’s reason Batman and the Joker have been antagonists for the better part of a century: because the Clown Prince of Crime laughing chaos is the perfect foil to Batman’s grim, studied quest for justice.

The Reverent Harry Powell
The Night of The Hunter (1955)
We’re not sure we’ve ever enjoyed hating a movie character more than this self-righteous, yet utterly despicable reverend. Man, we really want to smack him in the face.

Hannibal Lecter
The Silence of The Lambs (1991) and sequels
Dr. Lecter enjoys fine music, is soft spoken, and sympathetic, yet he eats people’s body parts and has to be kept fully restrained. Yet… we still kinda like him. Hannibal’s complexity makes him one of the greatest movie villains of all time.

Hans Beckert
M (1931)
It’s rare to see an honest dose of humanity mixed in with movie villains, much less in 80-year-old films about child murderers, but when we see Hans Beckert’s clearly trapped in his own psychological prison, it changes the entire tone of the story, and that certainly makes it worth a shot on our list.

Anton Chigurh
No Country For Old Man (2007)
Perhaps the only thing more terrifying than realizing the humanity in the villain is coming face-to-face with an utter lack of humanity. And that’s what Javier Bardem manages to portray an Anton Chigurh.

Norman Bates
Psycho (1960)
Norman Bates is certainly a psycho, but it’s a chillingly human kind of crazy. He’s a nice young man who loves his mother, but in the most twisted way imaginable.

Frank Booth
Blue Velvet (1986)
Looking at Frank Booth’s twisted perversions is almost, just, maybe like looking into a dark mirror at ourselves. And that’s what makes him the most frightening - and greatest - villain in movie history.

Fresh Dressed Documentary Schools Us On Hip-Hop And Style

Fashion has always had a place in the hip-hop world -- from Kanye West waxing poetic on the importance of style to Run DMC revolutionizing the Adidas sneaker, major labels and trends have influenced the rap game, and vice versa.

One new film is documenting it all by taking a deeper delve into the relationship between hip-hop and fashion. Fresh Dressed: The Revolution Of Fashion Born On The Streets recently debuted at this year's Sundance Film Festival and has already generated significant buzz. The film explores the rich background of rap's many uniforms of style, including the relevance it has in today's world.

Directed by Mass Appeal's creative director Sacha Jenkins and co-produced by rapper Nas, the documentary uses a series of perspectives from a star-studded cast, including Andre Leon Talley and Pharrell. The film is is a surefire standout from the rest of the festival's lineup. On the surface Fresh Dressed highlights the ongoing innovation that urban style and music often cultivate while its depth expands on the political and social issues that come with trends like Pumas and baggy jeans.

Representation hits at the heart of the film, as artists, rappers and ordinary people alike have send many messages not only through their actions and words, but with their outfits as well.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, director Jenkins expands on this connection, using issues like gang culture and the crack cocaine epidemic as prime examples of the evolution of style. He says:

"The film jumps from era to era, but if you pay attention, you can see how fashion went from this thing that represented who you were as a gang member to who you were as a crew member, and then it went to commerce." Furthermore, Jenkins' vision also brings up numerous topics that elevate (or plague) the black and Latino communities in regards to hip-hop fashion, like unofficial celebrity endorsements, money and hopefully, cultural appropriation.

The Fresh Dressed documentary will air on CNN this year but while you wait for that day to come, check out the clip below.

Idris Elba Links With Aero Manyelo & Mahotella Queens In ‘Aero Mathata’ [Premiere]

“Aero Mathata” is the lead track from Idris Elba‘s upcoming mi Mandela album, a Madiba-inspired 11-track ““celebration of South African music” that Elba curated, wrote and produced alongside SA and British collaborators. The single blends harmonies from 60s Mbaqanga ‘girl group’ Mahotella Queens over an infectious afro-tech concoction from producer Aero Manyelo. YouTube Now Supports 60fps Videos

You've never watched YouTube quite like this: today the company began rolling out support for higher video frame rates like 60fps. We've seen movie trailers and other special clips appear with higher fps counts before, but now it works for regular user uploads, too. To see the smoother motion, you'll need to be watching in either 720p or 1080p HD. Both Chrome and Safari 8 worked fine in our tests, but we're seeing mixed results with mobile browsers. Once you hit play, the difference is immediate and hugely noticeable — especially when you're watching video game footage.

There are plenty of situations where faster frame rates can make a huge difference, but it's easy to spot the upgrade with gaming content. For years, YouTube uploads have been capped at around 30fps, which looks perfectly fine when watching most types of video, but falls short with games. When you're playing a PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Wii U through your television, the frame rate is always much higher than what YouTube's been able to display — until now.

Finally YouTube can show those clips at their native frame rate. Kotaku points to the above Mario Kart 8 as demo footage, and rightly so: it looks amazing. Watch for long enough and you might start wondering why there's not a controller in your hand.

Back in June, YouTube promised that it would add 48fps and 60fps playback support for "motion-intense" videos uploaded to the service, but it's kept relatively quiet on the matter since. But now it would appear that smoother frame rates are here. Other videos published today (such as the below Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze clip) also exhibit 60fps playback.

Karen Mabon | Vintage-Inspired Scarves That Go With Everything.

In 2014, you probably don't consider a silk scarf your go-to accessory for pairing with platform sandals and cutout dresses. But what if those silk scarves came in patterns inspired by scenes from Hitchcock movies? Lucky for all of us, they actually exist. And it's all thanks to Karen Mabon, otherwise known as the Scottish creative who is obsessed with Grease 2 and vintage prints of insects.

I had the chance to chat with the seriously cool designer and artist about everything from her daily inspiration to the next band she's checking out live. Get it all in my interview below!

How did you get into making scarves specifically?

I studied jewelry at college and worked at a company designing it after, but I always did a lot of drawing and it just seemed like a natural way to combine drawing with making something wearable. I always wanted to do clothes, but I felt like the patterns you could get were quite boring and derivative and I wanted to do something that was a bit more unexpected. I like when you open the scarf up and there's something different going on in each of the corners. You can really enjoy it and it's like a conversation piece.

I saw you once created a scarf based on a scene from The Birds. What are some of your favorite movies and are there any scenes that you want to translate into a piece some day?

I really love Grease 2. It's by far the superior Grease. It's so ironic and I'm kind of obsessed with American culture and the way that we see it in Britain is quite different. We all grew up watching Sister, Sister (it's brilliant) and I think every kid in Britain just wished that they were at the Saved by the Bell school in America. I love The Grand Budapest Hotel, it's so good. Wes Anderson is so great. His films would translate so well into designs because he's got a natural aptitude for colors--he should be designing scarves. But I really want to do a scarf based on the scene from Romeo + Juliet where Leonardo DiCaprio is looking through that fish tank.

Do you watch movies all day in your studio for inspiration?

I'd love to, but then I would just sit there and watch movies. I really love YouTube. I just love watching these old clips of Elvis and I'm like, "Oh my god, he's so amazing." I did watch this documentary over the Christmas holiday...you know that poodle grooming championship in Hershey? All these people carve the hair of their poodles into different shapes and one of them was like Memoirs of a Geisha and it had a little bridge over the back.

What's the last concert you went to?

It's been a while, but soon I'm going to see The Libertines. I love Radio 6 music, too. It's great.

What can people expect to see from your 'fall 2014 collection?

Oh, well a lot of poodles...and lots of American things. Lots of ostriches and Las Vegas. I think it's good to be random. There's this dark beauty pageant scene that some people might think is too creepy, but I kind of like that. I love that film Drop Dead Gorgeous with Kirsten Dunst that's really dark and filled with black humor. It's so good.

Brooklyn Street To Be Named After Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing

Somewhere in fictional movie heaven, Radio Raheem is smiling.

Spike Lee’s prized film, Do the Right Thing is turning 25-years-old later this month and is reportedly receiving a historic honor on the very same streets it was filmed on.

This past Monday (June 2), Brooklyn’s Community Board 3 voted to rename Stuyvesant Ave, the block between Lexington Ave. and Quincy St., “Do The Right Thing Way.”

Lee took to his Instagram account to share the good news and pose with an already-made sign of the new street name. “Good Morning People.Great,Great News Today The City Of New York Has Changed Stuyvesant Street Between Lexington And Quincy In The Brooklyn Hood,” he wrote.

The announcement may have been a tad bit premature, seeing that City Council has the final say-so on approving the name change. Councilman Robert Cornegy told the NYDailyNews that the process was much harder than posting on Instagram saying, “It’s a bit complicated, because the City Council’s standards for co-naming focus on people and organizations, not works of art.”

The Beastie Boys saw their fan’s hopes of getting a street renamed in the honor rejected by a Lower East Side community board, so nothing is promised when it comes to these procedures.

Nonetheless, the thought alone is enough to make a celebration about.

“I Know Ya Want It- Will Be On Sale.Soon Come And Dat’s Da Truth,Ruth.YA-DIG SHO-NUFF,” Lee continued on his social media as he promoted memorabilia from the movie.

Chicago is exploding with Art

We knew it all along, but finally a University of Chicago study affirms that Chicago is a city bursting with creatives.

That’s because the city’s labor force, as compared to other, similar cities, over-indexes in terms of artists. The study, Measuring Chicago’s Artistically Creative Economy, takes a look at how those in the field – from folks such as street painter wunderkind Hebru Brantley to creative writers such as “Divergent‘s” Veronica Roth – impact the local economy. And, if larger minds can agree on a way to measure and harness said art and culture, it could very well be added to the equation that measures the nation’s gross domestic product.

Here’s an interesting set of points from the study:

An estimated 63,008 artists work in Chicago. Designers represent the largest share of the artist workforce in Chicago, at 36.3 percent.

And:

Among Chicago artists, writers/authors and architects are most highly concentrated compared to the U.S. as a whole. Chicago also has higher concentrations of designers, musicians, photographers, actors, and dancers compared to the national baseline, but fell below the nation in its concentration “fine artists, art directors, and animators.”

Why does this matter? The study dovetails nicely with a number of city-sponsored public art events that span the summer and will expand everyone’s horizons. Brantley, who two years ago sold a piece to Jay-Z for $20,000 and is now showing in Beverly Hills, California, will be showcasing an exhibit called “Parade Day Rain” at the Chicago Cultural Center starting June 14, 2014. Not that Brantley’s paintings are singled out in the university’s study, but with smaller wall pieces that easily sell for at least $4,000, fervor for artists such as Brantley could stir an economic pot.

It’s all part of a larger discussion being held by the National Endowment of the Arts and the US Bureau of Economic Analysis, and others, who are trying to figure out how to measure how arts and culture contribute to the country’s gross domestic product.

In other words: culture is a measurable export.

While the big brains harangue over the definition of art economy, you can help move things along by visiting a growing number of modern exhibits. For the designer community, the CHGO DSGN: Recent Object and Graphic Design is a good bet. It opens May 31 and runs through November 2 also in the Chicago Cultural Center, in the Exhibit Hall, 4th Floor North.

It’s a major exhibition of “recent object and graphic design by 100+ of the city’s leading designers,” according to the city. It’s also curated by Rick Valicenti, the 2011 recipient of the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award, with displays designed by Tim Parsons, Associate Professor of Designed Objects at the School of the Art Institute.

What’s New on Netflix Streaming | May 2014

At the beginning of (and throughout) every month, Netflix Streaming adds new movies and TV shows to its library. Here is a quick list of several that you might be interested in. Some of these were added halfway through or near the end of April, but we're going to include them in this roundup anyway, since you may have missed them. Some may also have previously been on Netflix, only to have been removed and then added back.

Godzilla vs. Mothra
Just in time for Hollywood's latest stab at the King of Monsters, many of Toho Company's “Shōwa”-era Godzilla movies, from the defining 1954–75 run, are now available for your binge-watching preparation. Those looking for the reptilian behemoth in his purest, most metaphorical form should turn to Godzilla: King of Monsters, the Americanized version (now with more Raymond Burr!) of Ishiro Hond's original film. But for kaiju vs. kaiju throwdowns, Godzilla vs. Mothra ranks among the best. Beefed up with bizarre sci-fi/fantasy plot hooks — Mothra's “keepers” are a pair of Thumbalina twins — the movie helped Godzilla take a huge step forward into becoming Japan's biggest family-friendly franchise. It is a pinnacle of Man-in-Suit destruction.

Hook
Cited as one of Steven Spielberg's worst films by critics and one of his best by nostalgic children of the ’90s, the Robin Williams–starring Peter Pan epic arrives on Netflix for your definitive judgment. Does it capture the whimsy of childhood playtime? Or is it a bloated excuse for Dustin Hoffman (and the recently deceased Bob Hoskins) to go hog wild with an over-enunciated English accent? Rufio wonders if the naysayers are just too grown up to understand.

The Selfish Giant
Clio Barnard followed up her riveting, 2010 documentary/narrative hybrid The Arbor with this coarse bit of modern-day Dickens. Teetering on the edge of miserablism, The Selfish Giant follows two 13-year-old working-class boys as they roam their small British town looking for junk to sell to a scrap dealer. When they stiff the guy, who turns out to be involved in some shady business on the side, hell breaks loose. Not every coming-of-age story can be picture-perfect. Barnard's portrait is unflinching.

Don Jon
Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut explores porn addiction, gives Scarlett Johansson a Jersey accent, and draws Tony Danza out from wherever Tony Danza was hiding the past decade. A scene where Johansson erotically convinces Gordon-Levitt to take night classes proves the actor turned director learned a thing or two hanging around Seth Rogen on the set of 50/50.

The Living Daylights
Like the Godzilla movies, Netflix earned a smattering of 007 missions this month, including Timothy Dalton's underappreciated first outing, The Living Daylights. After the Roger Moore–led installments devolved into pure buffoonery (looking at you, Moonraker), the franchise took its first gamble at a grittier, deadlier James Bond.

Instructions Not Included
This Spanish-language comedy turned heads last September when it took third place at the U.S. box-office charts in its debut weekend and earned over $44 million by the end of its run. Starring Eugenio Derbez as an Acapulco playboy thrust into the world of parenthood, Instructions Not Included is a for-all-ages comedy aimed at Latino families, who, much to Hollywood's surprise, are in search of entertainment as well.

Maximum Overdrive
Stephen King's sole directorial effort pits Emilio Estevez against killer machines (including an evil truck, an evil arcade machine, an evil lawnmower, and an evil soda machine). It's every bit as campy — and fun — as it sounds.

New seasons of TV:
