Netflix Readies '70s Hip-Hop Drama "The Get Down" For 2016

Netflix is dipping into hip-hop with their upcoming TV series "The Get Down."

Netflix continues to change the way we consume TV, from first simply offering a method to stream both TV shows and movies online, to later getting into producing original TV series themselves. It's worked out well, with shows like "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black" becoming just as popular as your average cable TV show.

They're not stopping there, as they continue to constantly develop new ideas for original series. The latest one, for which a trailer was just released, is actually centered around the 1970s hip-hop scene. Not to mention, it'll be directed by Baz Luhrmann ("The Great Gatsby", "Romeo & Juliet").

The Hollywood Reporter states that Luhrmann will be responsible for the first two episodes of the series, as well as the finale, and he will executive produce the series alongside Shawn Ryan ("The Shield").

"The Get Down" will focus on a crew of kids from the South Bronx, detailing how New York City gave birth to not only hip-hop but the punk movement as well. The VP of original content at Netflix shared a statement on the show, saying,

"From his very first and magnificently original steps on the world stage with "Strictly Ballroom" to his most recent with "The Great Gatsby", Baz conjures worlds we may not recognize initially, but once there, realize they are infused with the same dreams of every person — to belong, to matter, to live life to its fullest. We are thrilled to support Baz, Catherine and Paul and their team in their quest to illuminate those same dreams through the artists who came of age in the cauldron of the Bronx in the late 1970s."

Director Luhrmann added, "In this golden era of TV, the Netflix culture puts no constraint on creative possibilities. So it is a natural home for "The Get Down", a project I have been contemplating and working on now for over 10 years. Throughout, I've been obsessed with the idea of how a city in its lowest moment, forgotten and half-destroyed, could give birth to such creativity and originality in music, art and culture. I'm thrilled to be working with my partners at Sony and collaborating with a team of extraordinary writers and musicians, many of whom grew up with and lived the story we've set out to tell."

The show is slated to premiere in 2016, and in true Netflix style, you'll be able to binge-watch it as soon as it drops.

Microsoft Frees Xbox One From Kinect With $399 Standalone System



For everyone who felt the Xbox One is too expensive, Microsoft has apparently heard your complaints.

Microsoft announced that a new $399 Xbox One (£350 in UK) is coming June 9 that does not include the Kinect peripheral. Additionally, the Xbox One and Xbox 360 will no longer require a Live Gold subscription to access streaming apps like Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube, and HBO Go. A Live Gold subscription will also not be needed for some premium services on the Xbox One, such as OneGuide, Internet Explorer, and Skype.

There will still be some services that are exclusive to Live Gold subscribers, including the "Games with Gold" program, cloud game saves, and Game DVR. To celebrate the one-year anniversary of Games with Gold, Live Gold subscribers will receive an additional free Xbox 360 game in June. Additionally, Microsoft announced that both "Games with Gold" and "Deals with Gold" will come to the Xbox One in June.

The cheaper Xbox One model will allow Microsoft to match the $399 PS4 on price, along with removing the nearly required $60 yearly fee that raised the Xbox One's total cost of ownership. The subscription fee was an anomaly among living room devices, with other devices, such as the Google Chromecast, Roku boxes, and, most importantly, the PS4, having no comparable charges to access streaming services.

At the beginning of (and throughout) every month, Netflix Streaming adds new movies and TV shows to its library. Here is a quick list of several that you might be interested in. Some of these were added halfway through or near the end of April, but we're going to include them in this roundup anyway, since you may have missed them. Some may also have previously been on Netflix, only to have been removed and then added back.

Godzilla vs. Mothra
Just in time for Hollywood's latest stab at the King of Monsters, many of Toho Company's “Shōwa”-era Godzilla movies, from the defining 1954–75 run, are now available for your binge-watching preparation. Those looking for the reptilian behemoth in his purest, most metaphorical form should turn to Godzilla: King of Monsters, the Americanized version (now with more Raymond Burr!) of Ishiro Hond's original film. But for kaiju vs. kaiju throwdowns, Godzilla vs. Mothra ranks among the best. Beefed up with bizarre sci-fi/fantasy plot hooks — Mothra's “keepers” are a pair of Thumbalina twins — the movie helped Godzilla take a huge step forward into becoming Japan's biggest family-friendly franchise. It is a pinnacle of Man-in-Suit destruction.

Hook
Cited as one of Steven Spielberg's worst films by critics and one of his best by nostalgic children of the ’90s, the Robin Williams–starring Peter Pan epic arrives on Netflix for your definitive judgment. Does it capture the whimsy of childhood playtime? Or is it a bloated excuse for Dustin Hoffman (and the recently deceased Bob Hoskins) to go hog wild with an over-enunciated English accent? Rufio wonders if the naysayers are just too grown up to understand.

The Selfish Giant
Clio Barnard followed up her riveting, 2010 documentary/narrative hybrid The Arbor with this coarse bit of modern-day Dickens. Teetering on the edge of miserablism, The Selfish Giant follows two 13-year-old working-class boys as they roam their small British town looking for junk to sell to a scrap dealer. When they stiff the guy, who turns out to be involved in some shady business on the side, hell breaks loose. Not every coming-of-age story can be picture-perfect. Barnard's portrait is unflinching.

Don Jon
Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut explores porn addiction, gives Scarlett Johansson a Jersey accent, and draws Tony Danza out from wherever Tony Danza was hiding the past decade. A scene where Johansson erotically convinces Gordon-Levitt to take night classes proves the actor turned director learned a thing or two hanging around Seth Rogen on the set of 50/50.

The Living Daylights
Like the Godzilla movies, Netflix earned a smattering of 007 missions this month, including Timothy Dalton's underappreciated first outing, The Living Daylights. After the Roger Moore–led installments devolved into pure buffoonery (looking at you, Moonraker), the franchise took its first gamble at a grittier, deadlier James Bond.

Instructions Not Included
This Spanish-language comedy turned heads last September when it took third place at the U.S. box-office charts in its debut weekend and earned over $44 million by the end of its run. Starring Eugenio Derbez as an Acapulco playboy thrust into the world of parenthood, Instructions Not Included is a for-all-ages comedy aimed at Latino families, who, much to Hollywood's surprise, are in search of entertainment as well.

Maximum Overdrive
Stephen King's sole directorial effort pits Emilio Estevez against killer machines (including an evil truck, an evil arcade machine, an evil lawnmower, and an evil soda machine). It's every bit as campy — and fun — as it sounds.

2 Chainz made his first LIVE television appearance in advance of B.O.A.T.S. II #METIME on AXS TV's SKEE Live. Showcasing three songs off the new album dropping September 10th, 2 Chainz turned it up high with performances of "Feds Watching," "Netflix" and "Where U Been."



In a one-on-one live interview with DJ Skee, 2 Chainz covered a wide array of topics including trying to get on the roster of an NBA team (where he even had a message for AXS TV's Chairman and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban) and addressed recent TMZ gossip while responding to whether he now thinks he's a "target."

Video Girl | Movie | Must Watch

Just watched a dope movie on Netflix, featuring Meagan Good, Haylie Duff, Ruby Dee, Lisa Raye, Adam Senn, Paul Ben Victor, Melyssa Ford, Bun B, Bobby Valentino, Hoobastank, Juelz Santana, Max Minelli, Webbie, Esther Baxter, Suelyn Medeiros, Angela Lola Luv and many more. It is based on a True Story and I definitely recommend it for everyone, especially women. It made me think of the relationships in the art form and how to respect it like I always been. Some shady things go down in this movie that's based on reality. Anyhow, the movie came out late April of 2011 via AMC Theatres, but I'm glad Netflix is now streaming it. Its a great movie.
