NYC Box Truck: Queens w/ Smart Crew

NYC Box Truck: Queens w/ Smart Crew

The international soccer community is in a frenzy this summer thanks to the massive convergence taking place in Brazil. This means folks from different countries, cities, and boroughs even— all over the globe— are at attention and in grand hopes of their team's road to victory. Queens, New York City isn't immune to the highly contagious fever. Considering that the borough is a melting pot of soccer-loving ethnic communities like Colombians, Jamaicans, Mexicans, Germans and Greeks, among others, it certainly won't be difficult to find locals gathered up at bars, restaurants, delis, or even in plain public, tuning in to the play-by-play of the latest match.

It was for this reason that the Queens-founded Smart Crew decided to make use of their special box truck canvas, provided by Nike NYC, to commemorate the spirit of the biggest soccer event on the planet. Formed circa 1997 by original members MEY, SYCO13, and LUK, the diverse squad has been gaining attention and strength since. They approach graffiti in a very collective and calculated manner that very much reflects, not only their name and iconic "S" with graduate cap emblem, but also the diverse unity found in soccer culture. The crew gets down like the teams get down!

Epicly Later'd: Keith Hufnagel (Part 1)

Epicly Later'd: Keith Hufnagel (Part 1)

Part one of the series is a look back at Keith's formative days in early 90s New York City. Before HUF, and before everyone and their grandma had a pair of weed socks, he was just a kid, busting his ass to get sponsored.

To make this episode we sifted through a treasure trove of Hi8 and VHS tapes, including raw Keenan Milton and Gino Lannucci footage and an (almost) never-before-seen Fun Skateboards video. We hope you like it.

Losing Millions on the Homie Vending Machine Empire: Profiles by VICE

Losing Millions on the Homie Vending Machine Empire: Profiles by VICE

In 1996 Bradley Ellison, a.k.a. Sugarman, started Sugar Daddies vending company in Staten Island. He placed thousands of machines throughout New York City in pizza parlors, supermarkets, and corner shops.

Due largely in part to a cash economy, his business flourished, shaking down every neighborhood kid for their milk money in exchange for a sticky hand, bouncy ball, or a handful of candies.

In 2004, he finally made it big with the "Homies" series (arguably the most popular vending toy of all time), grossing over $1 million in sales.

We traveled to New York City's forgotten borough, Staten Island, to find out how Sugarman created a small vending empire—and how he subsequently lost it—one quarter at a time.

NIKE SB X BAOHAUS DUNK HIGH | CHAIRMAN BAO

You might know BaoHaus as a top eatery in NYC, or for the hilarious Fresh Off the Boat series with Eddie Huang, but now the company is extended their brand even further with some help from Nike SB.

This special Dunk High collaboration is called the "Chairman Bao" — a nod to the restaurant's signature dish — and features a colorway reminiscent of BaoHaus's 14th street exterior.

From the beige unfinished suede upper to the ice blue midsole, you'll be craving these big time.

Expect these Nike SB Dunk High “Chairman Bao” kicks to hit Nike SB retailers starting April 1st.

Dave Chappelle Headlines his 1st Ever Show

Dave Chappelle To Headline His 1st Ever Show At Radio City Music Hall In June

 photo 4c435543-596a-4c5b-9d4c-6f05f55cef69_zps81a4947f.jpg

Dave Chapelle is coming back to New York City. Last night (March 27th), LiveNation sent out a press release stating that Dave Chapelle will perform at Radio City Music Hall in June.

The show will be Chapelle’s first ever headlining show at Radio City Music Hall. Tickets go on sale to the general public next Friday (April 4th) at 10 A.M. on ticketmaster.com. Prices for the tickets will range between $59-79.

American Express® Card Members can purchase tickets before the general public beginning Tuesday, April 1 at 10 a.m.through Thursday, April 3 at 10 p.m.

This may be Chapelle’s first headlining show at Radio City Music Hall but he has performed at the famed establishment. Back in May of 2006, he appeared as one of The Root’s surprise guests during Verizon Presents The Roots With Special Guests. The appearance occurred a month after telling Oprah on The Oprah Winfrey Show that he left The Chapelle Show due to fatigue, lack of creative control and illness as a reason for his decision. To the packed crowd at Radio City Music Hall back in May 2006, he told a different story:

I figured it out. This whole sh*t is run off a game. Nobody knows what the game is. I figured it out. I know the whole sh*t. You have to look for the clues when you dealing with Hollywood. You have to ask yourself the right question, because Hollywood thinks they’re slick. I’m serious, man. Ask yourself this: How many people live in India? 1.2 billion. So think about it: Do you think Hollywood, could’ve found an Indian to play Ghandi.

The film Chapelle may have been referencing was the 1982 film Ghandi which had British actor Ben Kingsley play the role of Mahatma Ghandi.

Check out 10 minutes of Dave Chapelle’s set at The Roots’ 2006 “Verizon Presents The Roots With Special Guests” below:

Breakdancing & Fine Art w/ Rostarr

Romon Kimin Yang, aka Rostarr, is a painter, calligrapher, and filmmaker living and working in Brooklyn. He spent much of his early career focusing on painting and graphic design, blurring the lines between the two. For the past 15 years he has been more widely known for his abstract polymorphic paintings, sculptures, and black and white calligraphic drawings. Rostarr pushes all boundaries in his work, always striving to find freedom within style, medium, and form. He builds upon the visual language he calls "Graphysics," a word that exemplifies the geometric dynamism characteristic in his work. VICE recently met up with him in Mexico City as he prepared for his most recent solo show, Turbo Arena, at Anonymous Gallery. We sat down with him to discuss his style, techniques, and approach to art-making.
