TOC | A Vertical Record Player by Roy Harpaz

"TOC" was created with two main aspects in mind: easy use with a clean and simple design. It works with a linear tracking system to capture the good old analog sound and of course allows for easy operation via remote control – but also via LED touch buttons on the front panel. Users can easily skip between tracks, thanks to a sensor that scans the tracks on each vinyl inserted.

Built with special spherical bearings, even warped records can now be played without any problem. 'TOC' is also comes with a built-in carbon fibers brush that captures dust thus stylus stays clean.

Besides enjoying the sound of the record playing and the viewing of the spinning record, it becomes an interesting conversation piece and unique accessory to any home. Its front panel is made from CNC-cut walnut wood and is a great addition to any room in the home. Even when a record isn’t playing, the ‘TOC’ vertical record player can stand alone as an interesting piece of creative design.

TOC' uses standard stylus to capture analog sound. It's located inside a cartridge along with a sensor and carbon fibers brush.

The cartridge travel on the record's radius till its reach to the desired point, then the stylus automatically pops up to touch the record with a preset pressure which is not changeable.



'TOC' uses its own stylus and it comes calibrated so the pressure adjustment not needed.

You can mix music using Qbert's vinyl record sleeve

You might end up playing with this record's packaging more than you end up playing the actual record. For his new release, the double LP Extraterrestria and Galaxxxian, DJ QBert has built a Bluetooth DJ controller into the albums' vinyl packaging that allows you to manipulate songs on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. The controller is a thin sheet of paper covered in printed electronics and styled to look like a traditional DJ setup, with a platter on either side, a fader in the middle, and a handful of other buttons around the edges. The controller syncs with Djay — a fun and relatively easy mixing app for amateurs — and lets you mix QBert's new album or anything else that you load into the app.



Vinyl has been making a comeback over the past few years, and we're now beginning to see artists try to imbue the format with novel features that can't be found on other formats. Last year, Jack White released a record that included a number of unusual features on vinyl, including a groove that ran backward, tracks that played at different speeds, and a hologram. Like the bonus features that you often find on CDs or digital downloads bought from certain stores, these features all give listeners more reason to pick up vinyl. So even though DJ QBert's album may be sending buyers right back into a digital world, it'll be with an experience that couldn't be included in a smaller format's packaging.

Unfortunately, if you don't already have an order in for Extraterrestria and Galaxxxian, it sounds like you won't be able to pick up the vinyl and DJ controller. The double LP was funded on Kickstarter last year and released digitally over the summer. At the time, the plan was to only release this interactive packaging to backers, and it doesn't appear that that plan has changed. For anyone who has backed it, QBert says that the vinyl finally shipped out a few days ago, so there should be a number of these floating around soon. Also, if you're wondering what albums with names like Extraterrestria and Galaxxxian are about, listen to QBert break them down and introduce you to the Galactic Skratch Federation in his Kickstarter pitch:

The Arsonists | The Session

"The Session" catapulted The Arsonists to one of the pillars of the then new bubbling indy scene that was coming out of New York in the early to mid 90’s. With heavy play on the famed Stretch Armstrong show (hosted by Bobbito – who initially released the song on his legendary Fondle ‘Em Records) the song stood out showcasing the charismatic MC’s over an infectious jazzy bassline. Part Leaders of the New School, part Native Tongues , “The Session” was a special blend of originality that was lacking in the climate of Hip Hop at the time of its release.

For the B Side with “Halloween” The Arsonists take things conceptually pointing out the many “masks” people wear stating that “every day’s like Halloween/nothing’s what it seems” over an equally powerful piano laced beat. The single overall was a breath of fresh air and gave Hip Hop fans a taste of what was lacking – and an idea of great things to come from The Arsonists.

Gensu Dean | The Art of Digging

The Grand Imperial, Gensu Dean, SP1200 producer, analog equipment junkie, and Mello Music producer, recently took a moment out of his NYC travels to talk about "The Art of Digging." A pure vinyl head, who abides by the Jedi code, Dean still covers labels, doesn't do e-digging, and explains why in this short video clip. It's this ethos, combined with hard knock production, that has garnered Gensu production credits and friendships with Large Professor, David Banner, Brand Nubian, Planet Asia, and even a co-sign from the King, DMC of Run DMC. Most recently Gensu Dean produced the entire album for Mississippi emcee 7evenThirty on a record titled "The Problem."

Wild Style Breakbeats is a collection of 7 Seven-Inch records containing re-edited and extended breaks from director Charlie Ahearn's original reel-to-reel tapes. Making a visionary move more than a half-decade before any sampling or music clearance lawsuits would appear -- Ahearn decided that he wanted to control the music to be used in these scenes. They would create their own breakbeats, instead of using known cuts of the day; for instance, The Incredible Bongo Band's "Apache" or James Brown's "Funky Drummer."

Over the course of a week's time in the late summer of 1981, the Wild Style Breakbeats sessions were completed and mastered. The Session musicians for this historic project were Blondie's Chris Stein, downtown drummer, Lenny Ferrari (a regular on Glenn O'Brien's TV Party) with the guidance of Fab Five Freddy. None of the three principal musicians who played on the Breakbeats were ever in the studio at the same time. And the final number of white-label-only Breakbeats 12-inches was, according to Freddy, only 100, making them some of the rarest "Holy Grail" pieces of vinyl in music history. Most of the original Breakbeats were about one minute long.

For this special re-issue, Kenny not only extended but re-EQed and remastered the tapes. Thanks to these efforts, all 13 Breakbeats are presented here with top-level audio quality that has never been heard before. Additionally, since only bootlegs of the Wild Style Breakbeats have ever existed, this is the first time they have ever been presented on their own, as an official full album release.

DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist Announce "Renegades of Rhythm" Tour

DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist announced that they will be touring the United States this fall and playing music by Afrika Bambaataa. The Renegades of Rhythm tour is co-signed by the Zulu Nation founder himself.

“I call on all who love Hip Hop to come out, see them, hear them,” Afrika Bambaataa says in a press release. “My story is our history in deejaying.”

Afrika Bambaaataa is a deejay from New York. His music is not only Hip Hop but also features many genres from pop to salsa. His most popular work is the single “Planet Rock,” which was released in 1982 in collaboration with The Soul Sonic Force. They released Planet Rock - The Album in 1986.

DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist will be playing vinyl from Afrika Bambaataa’s personal collection. The records were stored in Cornell University’s archives and the deejays had to sort through more than 40,000 of Bambaataa’s records to decide which ones to use on the tour.

The tour is slated to mesh the old with the new by utilizing six turntables and visual effects from Ben Stokes, who frequently collaborates with DJ Shadow.

DJ Shadow has performed with Diplo and Bassnectar and helped with the music for the video game Grand Theft Auto V.

Cut Chemist is a former member of the Rap group Jurassic 5 and the Latin Funk group Ozomatli. His first solo project was 2006’s The Audience’s Listening. He started deejaying when he was 11 years old.

This isn’t the first time DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist have worked together. In 2008, they released The Hard Sell.

Limited-Edition | GZA Liquid Swords "Battle Scene" Screen Prints

For a limited time Get On Down is excited to offer the limited edition Liquid Swords "Battle Scene" Wood Block prints. This 18" x 18" wood block is based on the album's "Battle Scene" visuals which were included in Liquid Swords' original album packaging. These wood blocks are screen printed by AntiDesigns, with a deluxe resin finish by Josh Falk.

This resin finish adds a nice texture to the wood block, giving it a glass-like look. As shown in the video, the process to make these is quite involved. First, with Jay (AntiDesigns) making the screen and hand printing each block while Josh pours the clear, colorless liquid resin over the wood, adding flame to cast it permanently. These are hand-numbered and limited to 100.
