DJ QBert | Jellyfish Lazerface Mixtape

Today, Mass Appeal brings you the premiere of DJ QBert’s JELLYFISH LAZER FACE, a recap of his “Extraterrestrium: The Guided Space Tour,” which ripped through the U.S. this past fall. The mixtape was described to us as “an odyssey of future bass music,” and features tracks from Mr. Carmack, El-P, LOUDPVCK. QBert also delivers a few surprises from his upcoming instrumental release, Extramentals Vol. 1.

You can mix music using Qbert's vinyl record sleeve

You might end up playing with this record's packaging more than you end up playing the actual record. For his new release, the double LP Extraterrestria and Galaxxxian, DJ QBert has built a Bluetooth DJ controller into the albums' vinyl packaging that allows you to manipulate songs on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. The controller is a thin sheet of paper covered in printed electronics and styled to look like a traditional DJ setup, with a platter on either side, a fader in the middle, and a handful of other buttons around the edges. The controller syncs with Djay — a fun and relatively easy mixing app for amateurs — and lets you mix QBert's new album or anything else that you load into the app.



Vinyl has been making a comeback over the past few years, and we're now beginning to see artists try to imbue the format with novel features that can't be found on other formats. Last year, Jack White released a record that included a number of unusual features on vinyl, including a groove that ran backward, tracks that played at different speeds, and a hologram. Like the bonus features that you often find on CDs or digital downloads bought from certain stores, these features all give listeners more reason to pick up vinyl. So even though DJ QBert's album may be sending buyers right back into a digital world, it'll be with an experience that couldn't be included in a smaller format's packaging.

Unfortunately, if you don't already have an order in for Extraterrestria and Galaxxxian, it sounds like you won't be able to pick up the vinyl and DJ controller. The double LP was funded on Kickstarter last year and released digitally over the summer. At the time, the plan was to only release this interactive packaging to backers, and it doesn't appear that that plan has changed. For anyone who has backed it, QBert says that the vinyl finally shipped out a few days ago, so there should be a number of these floating around soon. Pioneer PLX-1000 Turntable Revealed | Video

Pioneer has officially announced their brand new analog vinyl turntable called the PLX-1000. This new Turntable by has most of the original layout of the iconic Technics 1200's that DJ's are familiar with along with some Super-OEM DNA and other minor improvements and adjustments to set it apart from the rest of the pack. The PLX-1000 also has the familiar Pioneer CDJ looks with the beautiful brushed black finish and silver/nickel accents. Check out the words and demo from legendary turntablists Q-Bert and Shortkut in the video below to get an early look at the PLX-1000.

The PLX-1000 has most of the familiar layout of a Technics 1200 with updates to make it that much better. For starters, it has the same Super-OEM turntable motor that is much more powerful than the standard Technics. This is the same motor in the Stanton ST-150's and other turntables like the new Reloop RP-8000 that we recently reviewed. Another upgrade to the PLX-1000 over the 1200's would be the removable (and replaceable) RCA cable and power cables. The PLX-1000 also has additional sound dampening and rubber reinforcements inside the turntable and also inside the tonearm which makes it a bit heavier than a 1200. Another nice touch is that the start/stop button has also been replaced with the play/pause button from the CDJ series. The PLX-1000 turntable also has new tempo range adjustments of ±8% and ±16% to ±50% while the classic 1200 only had 8%. One other item to note is the absence of a Phono to Line switch which means these turntables don't have an internal pre-amp as some other turntables, so its Phono Mixer RCA inputs for these only.

The Pioneer PLX-1000 turntable has a suggested retail price of $849 according to the press release below and we'll have a full demo and walkthrough at the Atlantic City DJ Expo Next Month, so stay tuned!

Way Too Many | Vinyl Destination

In the second episode of Vinyl Destination, Season 2, DJ Jazzy Jeff and his crew make rounds on the West Coast. Their first stop is San Francisco, and the name of the game is gadgets. Jeff pays a visit to DJ Tech Tools where he puts on his designer hat to create something really cool. Then Jeff heads to entertainment technology giant Gracenote where he participates in an intimate interview with his good friend and president of the company, Stephen White. And if you thought it couldn't get better, Jeff and the guys meet up with the legendary Qbert at the Thud Rumble office to talk music and gadgets before a night of a lifetime at The Mighty with DJ ShortKut.

In Vegas, the guys discover that Way Too Many, literally means Way Too Many at a 90's themed party at Ghostbar in The Palms Hotel and Casino. Or was it a furry party? Either way there's plenty of music, dancing and drinking to go around.
