A couple of weeks ago some of the local talent from Auckland got together to paint at an Ironlak BBQ Burners Graffiti Jam.
The lineup featured a combination of new and established writers including BERST, DEWS, FROST 45, GASP, HASER, JOINTS, MARK, KEZAM, and RAMS.
Other than local graffiti battles organised by BERST, there are very few opportunities for writers from across the different generations to come together, and connect on a wall to share ideas of their process and style.

Ironlak BBQ Burners | Auckland, NZ

Inari | Ironlak Studio
Sydney based visual artist Inari gets to work on a canvas inside the Ironlak Studio in Brisbane, Australia.
Inside the studio or outside on walls – Inari has a multidisciplinary approach to her craft. Whether it’s bold, vivid brush strokes on canvas with Ironlak Oil Paint, or getting down with traditional large scale aerosol portraiture; this Sydney based, Melbourne bred creative gets it done.
We hung out with Inari for a whole week of good times in our HQ Ironlak Studio, and made a beautiful mess inside an empty warehouse office space.
Inari prefers Ironlak Oil Paint when working on canvas because of her approach to texturing each piece, and the slower drying time which allows her to work seamlessly over multiple painting sessions.

Lusid Art | Ironlak Studio
Gold Coast-based visual story teller and illustrator Lusid Art (Alex Saba) creates an illustration at the Ironlak Studio in Brisbane, Australia.
Lusid talks us through her image reference choice, layer construction and what leads her to a reference in the first place. “I’m also drawn to inspiration and images with some attitude or some grit to them. People who tell a story – you can see it in the back of their eyes that there’s something there” says Lusid. Also pointing to her artistic direction in using familiar imagery presented in a new light for the viewer, Lusid’s delicate yet bold approach to her application process reflects a true dedication to her craft – in this case using Ironlak Sketching Pencils and Woodless Graphite Pencils to recreate a found image that inspired ‘Praise You’ – a group exhibition curated by Lusid opening at aMBUSH Gallery Friday, 8 September 2017.

Soundset 2017 Ironlak Live Painting
Once again the party people of Minnesota descended upon the Minnesota State Fair Grounds in Minneapolis for the annual Soundset weekend. Hosted by the amazing team from Rhymesayers Entertainment, the 2017 Soundset event was the tenth anniversary of the independent Hip Hop festival, and the show they put on did not disappoint.
Over 35,000 attendees hit the festival, with a solid line-up of Hip Hop acts gracing the stage. As always, the Ironlak Live Paint was in effect, with the A-team of rap sprayers on hand to give an array of surfaces a fresh lick of paint. From custom shaped IRONLAK/ SOUNDSET panels, to trucks – no surface was safe from the fury of the Ironlak and Sugar Artists’ Acrylic spray paint.

KEMS | Vision Quest
Vision Quest is the first instalment of an ongoing collaborative video series by American graffiti writer KEMS (@allchrome) and Los Angeles based photographer Kingston (@kingstonphoto). The series documents the search and activation of wasted spaces.
In the search for abandoned spots to explore and paint, KEMS discovered abandoned lines of trains out in the desert. Loading up with a stack of Lak Chrome spray paint and a large a-frame ladder, he trekked through the arid landscape to find a discontinued double-decker passenger train – potentially from the 60s or 70s. While the dates are uncertain, in tracing the history of the cars, they were used to convey people from Mexico to San Diego – at one point, this model was used in Chicago.
These adventures brought back the sense of discovery that graffiti originally gave him. In reflection, KEMS says that it seems people were at these locations one day and gone the next. Leaving him to question – “why did people abandon this place?”
Photos from these lurks will be featured in an upcoming zine and accompanied by a special edition Reload by Ironlak spray can. More details to be announced.

EWOK MSK | Ironlak Studio
American artist EWOK (MSK, HM, Ironlak Family) creates a vibrant illustration at the Ironlak Studio in Brisbane, Australia. Ironlak Pump Action Paint Markers were used to create all the outlines and finer details – with Sugar Artists’ Acrylic spray paint putting down the background fades and base layers through a series of hand cut paper stencils. An interesting insight into EWOK’s process in the studio and techniques he uses to create unique yet iterative works on paper.

STAY BOLD for Analogue Digital 2015
We teamed up with Wacom, Kontraband Studios and illustrator/design young-gun Stay Bold to create a unique t-shirt for Analogue/Digital Creative Conference in Brisbane. Filmed at Stay Bold’s studio on the Sunshine Coast and Kontraband Studios in Toowoomba, we watch the design process unfold from initial concepts on paper with Ironlak Strikers Tri-grip Twin Makers; through to conveniently creating finished art with the Wacom Cintiq Companion 2 and final production via the screen-printing finesse of the good crew at Kontraband Studios.

Ironlak Family at Rehlhatna in Dubai | World’s Longest Graffiti Scroll
In November 2014, as the people of the United Arab Emirates were gearing up to celebrate their 43rd year as a country, the Ironlak Family set off towards the Middle East from their respective corners of the globe. In Dubai the Lak Fam joined over 100 artists from around the world in an ambitious attempt to set a new world record for the “World’s Longest Graffiti Scroll”.
Titled ‘Rehlhatna’, meaning ‘Our Journey’, the main feature of the event was a ridiculously long canvas on Jumeirah Beach which was stretched into the shape of the country. The artists were asked to create work which reflected the past, present and future achievements of the UAE.
On the final day, an official judge from Guinness World Records measured out the scroll at 2245.4 metres and declared the new world record set.
Big ups to TUESY for making this happen for us. Huge thanks go to Sameh, Eddy and the rest of the crew for executing on this crazy vision and the Crown Prince of Dubai for making it a reality.
Greetings to all of the artists who we had the privilege of sharing the canvas with. It was an honour to meet you all we hope meet again some day, somewhere.

Stand Or Fall | Ironlak
n late 2013 our friends at Read The Label and Mutant Pros embarked on an exciting media project with Red Bull. Here's a statement from them about the documentary:
Throughout a long working and personal relationship, the two creative entities merged their areas of expertise into one larger than life film experience. In this first installment of Stand Or Fall the skateboarding and Graffiti art cultures are forged, highlighting the rebellious nature and global communities of artists and athletes by documenting the road trip process.
Mixing in interesting first hand accounts and personal motivations from both cultures and figures from the local scenes, we've compiled some very insightful and interesting content. From the small differences and large similarities in the cultures and all of the talents personalities, to the unique skill level they all posses.
Bringing the audience along for the ride, we gathered two well accomplished and hard working artists and skaters, packed into the Red Bull recreational vehicle and hit the road to let the guys get loose. On the art side, James Haunt from Los Angeles CA and Australian graffiti giant Sofles came along and knocked out some amazing murals and provided some great insight in each Local. On the skateboarding side we had Dutch Red Bull and LRG Team rider Sewa Kroetkov and LA native Rykeis Tyson killing streets and parks for us. We we're so ecstatic that each of them were available for the trip, cause they were all of our first choices. We also got some great interviews with Pro skater Brandon Biebel, Gabe at FTC Sacramento and world renowned, Ironlak sponsored artist JURNE! The film's title is in reference to the complete focus and dedication all of these artists, athletes and entrepreneurs have given to their craft. There is no in between if you want to reach the height of your potential. We urge everyone watching to pick a side, win or lose, Stand or Fall!

To celebrate Ironlak's partnership with Carbon Festival we've organised a spruce up of Chinatown's iconic Croft Alley. To kick things off SOFLES flew to Melbourne for 16 hours and spent most of his day taking out a massive chunk of the alley.
From 5pm on tomorrow night (Sat 22 March), The Croft Institute will open its doors to mark the occasion as The Ironlak Croft Alley Party. We invite everyone to come down and check out new work by some of the country's best graffiti artists. The Ironlak Croft Alley Party is open to the public. See you there.
