The Chicago Latino Film Festival | April 3-17, 2014

The Chicago Latino Film Festival (CLFF) is produced every April by the International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago (ILCC), a pan-Latino, nonprofit, multidisciplinary arts organization dedicated to developing, promoting and increasing awareness of Latino culture among Latinos and other communities by presenting a wide variety of art forms. The Chicago Latino Film Festival began in 1985 with 14 films projected onto a concrete wall for 500 viewers, and has now grown into the ILCC, which was originally founded as Chicago Latino Cinema.

The growth of the Festival from 500 attendees to more than 35,000 in 29 years is a clear evidence of the great demand for quality Latino arts programming in Chicago. During the festival, over 100 feature and shorts films from all over Latin America, Spain, Portugal and the United States are screened. The programming represents the great diversity of themes and genres of the Latino filmmaking. The two-week Festival also feature opportunities for the audiences to participate in discussions with the directors at the screenings as well as at series of special events highlighting the diversity of the Latino culture. 2014 will mark the 30th anniversary of the Chicago Latino Film Festival.

Munchies: Alexei Zimin

All the stories you hear about Russians and drinking are true; anyone who says otherwise is a liar. And most of the stories you hear about chefs and drinking are true, too. With that in mind, Moscow's Alexei Zimin was everything we hoped a Russian chef would be. We had a free night in Moscow after shooting an episode of Far Out in Siberia, so we got in touch with Alexei and he said to come by his restaurant, Ragout. There are actually two Ragouts: the smaller, original location, and the second one, near Prospekt Mira, next to one of the stadiums from the Moscow Olympics. That's where this Munchies episode begins.

To call the new Ragout a mere restaurant would be an understatement; it's a fine dining room, a casual cafe, a cooking school, a bookstore, and more. Alexei studied at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and worked under chefs like Michel Gerard and Raymond Blanc before opening Ragout with fellow cook Ilya Shalev. They filter French technique through their Russian sensibilities and take influences from their travels for everything they do—which, in Alexei's case, also includes being the editor of Eda, a great Russian food magazine, organizer of the Moscow Festival of Food, cookbook author, and television show host. It's hard to imagine how he does it, if the hangovers he gave us were any indication. Here's what we can remember: after Ragout we went to Bar Bontempi and met the owner, Mitya Borisov, a semi-legendary figure with eyes the color of Merlot. Then it was off to 32.05, a cafe/bar in the middle of a park where Alexei showed us his amazing singing voice, and then to Noor Bar, a cocktail bar as good as any in New York. At that point things become hazy, but we can recall one of Alexei's friends knocking out our field producer with one punch, and the night ending over bottles of vodka at Jean-Jacques, a great late-night bar, neither of which are on camera, unfortunately. Be careful when you go drinking in Moscow.

Danny Brown | Devotion | A Tree Documentary

In July of 2012, Tree watched Danny Brown perform at Chicago's Pitchfork Music Festival. Soon after, Tree predicted that he too would grace the Pitchfork stage and be counted amongst a group of talented musicians pushing Chicago music forward in 2013. Tree accomplished those goals through the release of his honest, genuine, and urgently grimy Sunday School projects, the most recent volume - When Church Lets Out - was released in May of 2013. The releases earned him critical acclaim, and a coveted performance slot at Pitchfork Fest 2013.

This short documentary profiles the emcee and producer through archive footage from a year ago, and a candid weekend with Tree as he prepared for his big set.
