Shon Roka (pronounced Shaun Roca) the DJ also known as Shaun Ortega was born on the west-side of Chicago. He started gaining fame as a bboy in 1991 and later became a member of a well known crew called the BRICKHEADZ. He would perform for such artist and events such as The Roots, KRS One, Immortal Technique, Dougie Fresh, Common, Rhymefest, Cypress Hill, Pharoah Monch, Nas, Diddy, Mariah Carey, Taste of Chicago, Lollapolooza, Looptopia, B96 Summer Bash just to name a few. The BRICKHEADZ also won many breakin' competition nationally and internationally. While Shon Roka was being active as a bboy he was working on his craft of being a DJ.

DJ Rude One x Your Old Droog | Mr. Goodbar | Documentary
DJ Rude One has been a fixture in Chicago's Hip Hop scene since the indie renaissance of the early 2000's. As part of the production duo Single Minded Pros Rude released From Now On in 2004. The LP featured reigning emcees of the time such as Kool G Rap, Pacewon, JUICE, Mr. Lif, and more. While S.M.P. went on hiatus in the years since, Rude continued to contribute to Chicago Hip Hop through DJing parties at storied clubs such as The Note, Lava Lounge, and Dark Room. Revered by every generation of Chicago Hip Hop, Rude is feeling creative again on the production side and quietly put together a new LP ONEderful.
This new documentary shows the creation of the LP's 1st single, "Mr. Goodbar" featuring NYC spitter, Your Old Droog.

Chicago Creative Series: Zoe Rain
A few years ago, Zoe Rain was handed a camera & told to take photos at an early Macklemore concert in her native Seattle, Washington. While she was pushed into it, Zoe fell in love with the craft of photography, and continues to share that love on a daily basis.
Last year, Zoe moved to Chicago and found a home within the artistic community in the Windy City. Last month, Zoe became the first photographer to be featured in our Chicago Creative series presented by PAX. She displayed her photos at our pop-up gallery, and let us into her creative space in this new vignette by Andrew Zeiter.

Allan Kingdom | Glass Up
Closed Sessions collective brings artists to their town with a request and a challenge: play a show and create a song, while being filmed. Minnesota rapper Allan Kingdom was up to the task this time around, and the result is “Glass Up (Chi x TC).
Kingdom raps over an Odd Couple sample of The Hics’“Lines.”
The slower beat gives Kingdom plenty of room to try a variety of rhythms and flows—it sounds like this one was fun to make. The audio is below, followed by the Closed Sessions’ making-of video.

Mick Jenkins | Lazarus | Prod. By Chuck Strangers
Mick Jenkins flows over production from Pro Era's Chuck Strangers on "Lazarus."
It looks like Mick Jenkins is almost ready to drop off his long-awaited follow up to his debut Trees And Truths. The Water[s] has been teased ever since Mick delivered "Martyrs" in December, and today, an official tracklist, cover art, and a release date have been let go, along with this new cut, "Lazarus."
Mick Jenkins' gritty voice and sharp words contrast the mellow production from Strangers on "Lazarus." All I can say is, homie, you better put on that thinking cap before hitting play.
The Water[s] is set to feature Jean Deaux, NoName Gypsy and Ebony, with production mainly coming from frequent collaborator OnGaud, as well as looks from DJ Dahi, Statik Selektah, High Klassified and more. It's dropping August 12th.

Chicago’s winter was especially brutal in 2014, yet in stark contrast, our Hip Hop scene has been on fire. On the coldest day of the year they assembled an all-star cast of Mick Jenkins, Dally Auston, NoName Gypsy, Saba and producers OnGaud at SoundScape Studio for a special Closed Session.
While this group of emcees and producers have been friends for a long time, and worked together in the past, this session was their first time all working together simultaneously on one song. The result is “Realer Than Most” a dope new cut from there newest compilation, Closed Sessions Vol. 3 releasing soon.

Documentary: "Fresh Like Me" ft. Vonnegutt & Mic Terror
Vonnegutt came through Chicago, IL in August of 2010 to perform at Lollapalooza. Before hitting the festival, Vonnegutt came by the studio straight off a long drive from Georgia. In the studio, they requested the services of Chicago's Mic Terror, who came through to help create "Fresh Like Me".

Vic Mensa x Phony PPL: "Orange Soda" Live at Schubas
On July 7th, Vic Mensa took the stage at Schubas as part of the Closed Sessions x 1833 Presents Live Music Weekend: A Tribute To Independence. Vic performed all new material during his set, giving fans a nice preview of his forthcoming solo project, INNANETTAPE.
To conclude his set, Vic welcomed the weekend's headliners, Phony PPL, onto the stage for a special and rare performance of his 2013 summer anthem, "Orange Soda".
