The Dynospectrum | Tenfold (Remaster)

One of the biggest surprises in rediscovering the Dynospectrum reel-to-reel tapes was finding a previously unreleased verse from Slug on “Tenfold”, arguably one of the album's best songs. While the version that was originally released on the album featured Slug on the hook, it was only I Self Devine and Mr. Gene Poole who had verses. On the original recording, however, Slug ended the song with an excellent verse, as well as some additional commentary to bring the song to a close. Although we've asked, no one seems to recall why the decision was made to release this song without the Slug verse. Now, 20 years later, we are finally hearing this song the way it was originally recorded, for the very first time.

In addition to finding that little surprise, “Tenfold” is also a great example of when re-mixing and remastering a project makes a clear sonic difference. Listening to this new mix compared to the original brings new life to the song, amplifying the textures and the intensity while maintaining its beautifully haunting essence.

As the Rhymesayers Entertainment classic, The Dynospectrum, approaches its 20th anniversary, we couldn't think of a better way to celebrate this milestone than to announce we're finally releasing the full-length album on vinyl for the first time ever!

We dug through the basement archives and unearthed the original reel-to-reel recordings. After blowing off the dust, we transferred the audio and sent it back to mixing, making sure that every eerie note and skull-snapping snare sounded crisp before it was fully remastered, truly bringing the darkness to light.

For those unaware, The Dynospectrum is a long-standing fan favorite in the RSE discography. The short-lived supergroup was comprised of MC's Slug (Atmosphere), Musab, I Self Devine (Micranots), and Mr. Gene Poole and was produced entirely by Ant.

The Dynospectrum 20th anniversary edition includes 3xLP vinyl pressed on black & cream side A/B effect records, with an illustrated 8-panel accordion fold-out poster, all housed in a gatefold jacket with original artwork re-touched by the brilliant visual artist Aaron Horkey.

This special release also includes three previously unreleased bonus tracks recorded during the original studio sessions, plus a free digital download card that also includes the album instrumentals (also made available here for the first time ever!)

"This is another presentation made possible by community. We shot it in New Mexico at Dar Al Islam, a beautiful worship and healing center built mostly by American Muslims in the Adobe style prevalent in the Southwest. Spiritual and wisdom tradition holds that buildings should be designed in harmony with the natural beauty of the location, as well as the culture of the people in that area. Many of my elders built this place, and many of my friends grew up there.

One thing interesting about this location is that after the death of Tupac Shakur, the Dar Al Islam community opened its doors to film his “I Wonder If Heaven Got A Ghetto" video there.

The dancers are Al Taw’am from Minneapolis. You may recognize them from the "Mourning In America” video, as well as their own international videos and news pieces. The twins are dear family friends and leaders in our cultural and spiritual community. Their movement speaks of their family legacy of dignified regality. I believe them to be royalty. They choreographed this incredible piece and brought the entire song and video to life.

The video was directed by Kron, whom we've worked with in the past. He and his crew did an incredible job and I'm deeply grateful.

Of course, Ant made the track with G Koop playing the instruments and deM atlaS added some additional operatic vocals at the end of the song. Special thanks to: Siddiq, Sidi Hakeem Archuletta, La'kisha Raeesah Holloman, Amir Sulaiman, and anyone else I'm forgetting.

On Friday, December 4, 2015, we celebrated the Rhymesayers 20 Anniversary Concert at the Target Center in Minneapolis, MN. Relive the experience with this recap video of the evening

Thank you to all the fans, friends and family who have supported Rhymesayers over our twenty years.

Thank you to everyone that touched the stage from the first needle drop to the confetti landing on the floor. Seeing all the DJs, MCs, musicians and dancers together in one place really was a beautiful thing to experience.

Thank you to the entire crew that worked two entire nonstop days to make sure the stage, lights, video and sound would be the best they could be for the evening. This show was a lot of work for a lot of people, much respect and appreciation to the fifty plus crew that made this night possible.

Thank you to First Avenue and the Target Center who helped and pushed us to make this show a reality from an idea over a year ago. Their support on this show was overwhelming and without them it would not have been possible.

Thank you to everyone at Rhymesayers and Fifth Element for all the hard work and dedication that was needed to make this show work. It's not always easy running our daily operations with the extra work load of a show this size, but somehow we pulled it off.

Since the early 90's, I Self Devine has been an active part of the Twin Cities Hip Hop scene. As a part of The Micranots and the Universal Vibe Squad, he helped make a mark that provided an unquantifiable impact, an aftermath of inspiration and an influence that can still be felt and heard today. “Self Destruction”, his first solo album, was a key turning point in his career as he took the time to look inside and give the listener a more personal view. The result was an album that differed, in many ways, from what he had done previously, but not without reflecting on some of that past in the songs' narratives.

With “Self Destruction”, we witnessed the perfect fusion of the music and man, all the triumphs as well as the challenges. The album was released at a time when artists' access to video wasn’t as common or abundant, so with the 10-Year Anniversary upon us, it seemed like the perfect time to look back on this pivotal Twin Cities Hip Hop album and let I Self Devine tell the story of Self Destruction.

This series will give background stories and/or meanings to every song on the album, including some B-sides and Bonus Cuts that coincided with the release. But first, this introductory video gives some insight on what lead I Self to record a solo album, and the meaning behind the title.

Slug (of Atmopshere) Talks #Rhymesayers20, Evolution of Soundset, Legacy Artists on SKEE TV

Slug of Atmosphere sits down with DJ Skee at Soundset 2015. He talks about not setting an end goal when they started Rhymesayers 20 years ago and how they will continue to not limit themselves. He speaks on about the evolution of Soundset over the last couple of years and how it has expanded. Initially the hip hop festival catered to mostly underground hip hop, but as more resources became available they were able to present various styles. Soundset has easily become the biggest hip-hop festival in the US, despite not having a strong marketing push. Slug talks about who he's excited to see perform and explains how they select which artists they want on the lineup.

Rhymesayers | SXSW 2015 | Showcase Recap

In celebration of our 20th Anniversary this year, Rhymesayers packed up and headed down to SXSW 2015 in Austin, TX. First, we gave a panel discussion on the label's history, as well as its future. Afterward, we headed over to the House of Vans at the Mohawk to perform a label showcase for a packed house. This was truly a night to remember.

This is a brief recap of this monumental event, which featured performances from Atmosphere, Dilated Peoples, Brother Ali, Grieves, Prof, deM atlaS and Get Cryphy, as well as surprise guest appearances from P.O.S, Freeway, Murs, Fashawn and the legendary Chuck D!

Thank you to all who came out to show us some love that night, as well as all those who've shown your love and support over the last two decades. With so much more in store, we look forward to growing with you in the years to come.

Beyond | Live at the Hip Hop Olympics (1996)

The Hip Hop Olympics was an event organized by Felipe Cuauhtli of The Native Ones and co-promoted by Headshots/Rhymesayers. The concept was to bring all the elements of Hip Hop together under one roof; complete with battles and performances. The first Hip Hop Olympics (12-6-96) took place at The Whole on the UofM campus, and featured performances from The Native Ones, Phull Surkle, Urban Atmosphere, and Beyond. There was also a MC Battle, hosted by I Self Devine and Slug, which featured a young Eyedea, who was clearly a step ahead of his competition, in one of his earliest documented Rap appearances on a local stage.

In this clip you have Musab "Beyond" Saad performing "The Factory", a popular track from his Rhymesayers debut CD, "Comparison", that had just been released (Beyond is also wearing a "Comparison" T Shirt). He is joined on stage by Illusions, as well as both Slug and D Spawn of Urban Atmosphere. On the back wall of the stage you see a poster image of Abstract Pack/Headshots member, Sess, who had recently passed away. It's the same image that was used on the cover of the Headshots Volume 4 Tape, "History", which was dedicated to Sess and his contributions.

DeM AtlaS | With A Smile

A new one from deM atlas (Joshua Turner), “With a Smile,” was produced by his pal Evan Slack and has a funky retro-soul sound to it and feel-good vibe. It includes a couple shout-outs to a girl named Lucy, which could be another “Peanuts” character reference from the rapper (whose first EP was titled “Charle Brwn”) or might be a nod to his Rhymesayer labelmates Atmosphere (who once famously had a thing for some unknown girl named Lucy Ford).



With a Smile” also is not attached to any formal release yet. However, the deM Man did just drop a new online EP, “DWNR,” and is working toward his full-length debut on Rhymesayers.
