#TGIF The Warrior Women of Asgarda
Katerina Tarnovska is a Ukrainian preschool teacher, a kickboxing world champion and a self-proclaimed descendent of the legendary warrior women of the Amazon. In 2002 she founded Asgarda, a martial art exclusively for women that is inspired by the tribal traditions of the Scythian Amazons. In the past decade, more than 1,000 ladies have been entrusted with the teachings of the Asgarda, which Katerina says is the only fighting style specifically tailored to the female form.

Welcome to Hell... In Norway
Hell is a quaint little village in Norway that's the resting place of 1,600 souls. There are red-roofed houses, a post office, a grocery store, even a church. It literally freezes over during the winter, which is yet another example of why its pun-friendly name draws tourists throughout the year. Weirdly enough, hell means "luck" in Norwegian, but the locals play up their association with the netherworld. When you pull into the train station, there's a sign that reads HELL GODS -- EXPEDITION, and the town's most famous native, Mona Grudt, who won the 1990 Miss Universe beauty pageant, proudly called herself "the beauty queen from Hell."
Then there's the annual Blues in Hell Festival, which was founded by Kjell Inge Brovoll, better known as "Hell Boss." This year, the festival brought a host of legendary American blues singers to the peaceful village, including Sugar Pie DeSanto, who is best described as a more unhinged and modern version of her late duet partner and childhood friend, Etta James.
Sugar Pie was my ticket to Hell. I first saw the 78-year-old, 4'11" spitfire on New Year's Eve 2012—she hopped on the stage, kicked off her stiletto heels, and gyrated with the intensity of a woman 55 years her junior.
When I asked if I could take some photos of Sugar Pie, her manager asked me to accompany them to Detroit, where she played Aretha Franklin's Christmas party. A year later, I got offered the chance to go to Hell with Sugar Pie. How could I have said anything other than "Hell, yes"?

Watch x Witness | Death Valley
The WATCHxWITNESS series is half adrenalin rush / half shutter battle between visionaries Jason Goldwatch & 13thWitness. The duo venture to the places that most people fear, and they retrieve images that both arrest and caress. In the end, what we see is the intersection of past and present, and human kind's innate ability to adapt and reinterpret. One man's abandoned train depot is another man's Technicolor disco. Welcome to the reflections bounced from a modern-day glitter ball.

The Japanese Love Industry
Japan is a country that is dying—literally. Japan has more people over the age of 65 and the smallest number of people under the age of 15 in the world. It has the fastest negative population growth in the world, and that's because hardly anyone is having babies. In these difficult times, the Japanese are putting marriage and families on the back burner and seeking recreational love and affection as a form of cheap escape with no strings attached. We sent Ryan Duffy to investigate this phenomenon, which led him to Tokyo's cuddle cafes and Yakuza-sponsored prostitution rings.
