10 years after Blu and Exile released their magnum opus Below the Heavens, the California duo have reunited to release 14 tracks from the original 2007 sessions. In the Beginning: Before the Heavens contains previously heard songs and unreleased gems – the best of the best chosen from over 40 songs in the vault. Their third collaboration follows 2012’s Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them, and is slated for an October release.
In The Beginning: Before the Heavens is made of up songs that are raw and untouched, keeping the authenticity of Blu and Exile’s creativity at the time. The album has guest appearances from familiar names like Dr. Oop, Donel Smokes, Aloe Blacc, and Blame One. While “Soul Provider,” “Another Day,” and “Party of Two” appeared on Blu’s Lifted EP, the majority of these songs showcase Blu rapping at his peak, maintaining his underground attitude as he dishes on reaching star status (“Constellations”), getting radio play (“On the Radio”), or opposing views in a problem-ridden world (“You’re Gonna Die Someday”). Exile, meanwhile, builds a golden hip-hop era feel with head-nodding samples and DJ scratches.

Off The Record | DJ Premier on Gang Starr's "Mass Appeal"
“Guru always makes the titles to the album first—before we do any music.”
The latest episode of “Off the Record” again features DJ Premier, who breaks down a little bit of the science behind his and Guru’s Gang Starr hit “Mass Appeal,” a classic, rugged boom bap anthem that helped inspire the name of the media brand and website you're reading. Quite the full-circle moment.
Now, for a story.
Every song had an overall mission, says Premier of his studio sessions with the late Guru, who passed in 2010. Some were so-called “rhyming” joints, others were romantic records. "Mass Appeal" was designed as an anti-radio track, signified by the twinkling melody in the background, which Premier explains has a hidden significance.
“We were just saying radio was watering down our stuff," said Preemo, "so we were like, ‘You know what? It always sounds like the music in the elevator.'” Bland and repetitive. It’s a brilliant concept, and one that would probably be more widely publicized if it worked the way the duo intended. Except…
“We were really making fun of radio, and it became one of our biggest radio records,” says Premier, as he reminisces on the track’s success. "Mass Appeal" peaked at No. 67 on the Hot 100 in 1994, and was featured on the soundtrack for the mega-popular 'Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4' video game. To this day, it’s widely recognized as a marquee moment from rap’s "golden age" era.

He would perform for such artist and events such as The Roots, KRS One, Immortal Technique, Dougie Fresh, Common, Rhymefest, Cypress Hill, Pharoah Monch, Nas, Diddy, Mariah Carey, Taste of Chicago, Lollapolooza, Looptopia, B96 Summer Bash just to name a few. The BRICKHEADZ also won many breakin' competition nationally and internationally. While Shon Roka was being active as a bboy he was working on his craft of being a DJ.
DJing for w/ Nike, Jordan, Under Armour, Adidas, Vans, Uprise (Chicago) Skateshop for numerous in-stores, sporting events, galleries and corporate outings. Also Shon Roka is a resident DJ post Covid in Chicago at McGee's, Tantrum, Imbibe and Harbee's.
