DJ QBert | Jellyfish Lazerface Mixtape

Today, Mass Appeal brings you the premiere of DJ QBert’s JELLYFISH LAZER FACE, a recap of his “Extraterrestrium: The Guided Space Tour,” which ripped through the U.S. this past fall. The mixtape was described to us as “an odyssey of future bass music,” and features tracks from Mr. Carmack, El-P, LOUDPVCK. QBert also delivers a few surprises from his upcoming instrumental release, Extramentals Vol. 1.

Stream and download JELLYFISH LAZER FACE below, and keep your ears locked in for the SXPXLZ snippet QBert teases at the end of the insane set.

Allan Kingdom | Blast

In an industry where so many artists tend to blend into one sound, Allan Kingdom’s quirky cadences are a refreshing alternative to the medium. On his latest track “Blast”, he flows over a beat with a bass that goes even harder with the volume on high. Produced by the rapper himself and the legendary Plain Pat, it’s only right that the instrumental supports Kingdom’s lyrical force, as he puts forth a well-rounded flow that goes along with his blistering lyrical prowess on the intense track.

But of course, all it works, with Kingdom showing off his understanding of using all the right creative elements and crafting them into a solid and catchy song. "Blast" is just another example of Allan's growing talents, which were on full display throughout the entire year, as seen through his various releases.

Stream the track below, and be sure to catch up on Allan's debut project, Future Memoirs, which he released back in June.

Soulection Interview Sessions | J. Rocc

Over the years there have been a handful of artists/DJs that I have always wanted to come on the show. We've had Dam Funk, Mr. Choc, Daddy Kev, Hazel, Rhettmatic, Ta-ku, Coleman, Iman Omari, and many others as special guests but i've always wanted to have J. Rocc of the legendary Beat Junkies/Stones Throw crew on the show. Well, our timing finally aligned and he came through the Soulection HQ to drop a set and sit down with me for an interview. He dropped a 60 min set full of future beats, bass, and some other left-field shit.

After that we sat down and chopped it about so many interesting things from his love for digging for 45's (Gospel Music), his production (that he keeps low key), his DILLA/MADLIB stories, and much more. J. Rocc is an overall tastemaker and one of the best on the decks. If you ever have a chance to see him live please go to a show and see for yourselves.

Enjoy this one and spread the word.

Georgia Anne Muldrow Releases “Ms. One” with MonoNeon

MonoNeon, a lefty known for playing a right-handed bass upside down, has brought his style to Georgia Anne Muldrow’s rap/experimental EP, Ms. One.

Muldrow, the daughter of musicians — her late father invented instruments for Eddie Harris — has put together a rap collection that still harkens back to a love of 70s jazz/soul/funk sounds. It’s the first full rap record for Muldrow, a multi-instrumentalist and free-form singer who has been putting out jazz/funk/R&B

A History of Modern Dance is Open Mike Eagle’s Dark Comedy take on every Cosby Show opening sequence ever (and features a cameo from fellow Hellfyre Club member Busdriver). Allow the sinister production by Jeremiah Jae to wash over you while Open Mike makes Bill’s trademark moves look smoother than ever. A History of Modern Dance is featured on Open Mike Eagle’s upcoming Dark Comedy LP due June 10 via Mello Music Group. GoldLink | Prod. By Kaytranada | Sober Thoughts

Virginia rapper GoldLink lets loose a new jam for your summer soundtrack. This one was produced by Kaytranada and brings thick bass, a touch of melody, and the agile delivery we’ve come to expect from the up-and-comer.

“Been thinkin’ about gettin this tat all on my face/Who gives a fuck nobody get to me see anyway”

On the new song, GoldLink says: “‘Sober Thoughts’ is a song about an unhealthy relationship I was in with a girl, where we would continue to mistreat each other, to spite each other. We were bad for each other, yet we always came back together, because we thought we “loved each other.” It was a young love, not a forever love. I was addicted to her and she was addicted to me, like a drug. We knew we should stop, but we kept going. In the end, I ask God for his help by saying, ‘You may not come when I want you, but you right on time.’”

JACK WHITE | LAZARETTO

“When I say nothing, I say everything,” howls Jack White on “Lazaretto”, staking the declaration between verses he spits out a little like Dylan in “Subterranean Homesick Blues”. The idea is enforced when, after swelling with distortion and flying phalanges, the song launches into a psych bzzzz and detours yet again for a fiddle-sweeped closing leg, reminding us that White produced Loretta Lynn not long ago. Just don’t expect either version (this or the world-record-breaking RSD single) to wow the average kindergartner more than, say, the world’s largest sundae. Lazaretto, White’s second solo album, is out June 10th. –Michael Madden

The title track from Jack White's new album LAZARETTO out June 9/10.

Closure | S.Chu featuring Terri Walker

Following rapturously received tracks on Strictly Rhythm and Copyright Recordings in 2013, London house producer S.Chu makes his Defected debut with 'Closure'.

Subtle and heartfelt with a quietly burning and persuasive energy, 'Closure' is deep soulful house at its most effective, with a vocal from Terri Walker that tells a story with which many of us will be familiar.

Moody keys and dubby pads lend the record a melancholy feel, yet the overall vibe is undoubtedly positive, with S.Chu's delicate balancing of the track's individual elements yielding exquisite results.
