Anderson .Paak | A N I M A L (Epsiode 5)
Anderson .Paak is steady steady cooking up that soul. In the fifth installment of his A N I M A L series, you get the complete picture of Paak as an artist from bare-bones creation to his amped up onstage persona. Scaling back on the quick, playful cuts, the shots linger much longer; the song snippets are extended; the sense of materialization is unavoidable.
The studio rat in him comes out like the occasional NYC subway rodent with the audacity to scurry on the platform instead of on the tracks. Whether AP is banging on a digital drum set while simultaneously laying down some vocals with DJ Khalil, or getting cosigns aplenty from Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Omarion, and others, it is clear that the stu is the animal’s natural habitat. With so many artists floating in and out of sessions and so many different snippets of songs, it’s unclear when and where all of this music will show up; but lawd it’s so funkin’ funky. A live performance for Revolt TV also displays his raw, beastly energy on stage for a guy on the smaller side.
The intentions behind this series were clear from the beginning: Get as many people hyped as possible for what Paak has in store. As transparent as that is, it’s pretty damn difficult to not be excited.

The first episode was like a tapas sampler of Paak’s rapidly transforming life—a mix of fuckery with the undergound homies, work and press events with some big name collaborators, and family interactions. This episode provides a bigger portion and more insight to the music that Paak has on deck.
It’s full of studio sessions, with co-signs in the form of awed and surprised looks from some big names in hip hop. Paak’s work ethic and artistry shine through. With more of Paak’s music present in this episode, it’s easy to get hyped off the short snippets, even when they cut in and out with the quickness of a light-switch. Amidst the music though, there is still time to teach Dumbfoundead how to make the ill breakfast sandwich (you’ll have to peep the episode for the recipe), and family foolery.

Anderson .Paak | A N I M A L (Episode 1)
Anderson .Paak unknowingly foreshadowed one hell of a ride last year on 2014’s Venice. The album’s first track, aptly titled “Waves” has sounds of the Pacific Ocean crashing onto the shore of Venice Beach in his native California. Paak also included a clip of renowned surfer Miki Dora (RIP) talking about what it feels like to ride a huge wave. We’re pretty certain that Paak can relate: Six production and vocal credits collectively on Dr. Dre’s Compton album have the artist formerly known as Breezy Lovejoy riding on top of a wave of buzz and opportunity that is arguably unparalleled this year.
Last week, he teamed up with Chicago/L.A. production duo Blended Babies to release The Anderson .Paak EP. Working with L.A. producer Knxwledge, the two recently finished up their next NxWorries EP while simultaneously touring with Earl Sweatshirt. Now Paak is preparing his next solo effort, Malibu, working with a crazy who’s who list that currently includes Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, 9th Wonder, and Madlib among others.
Today, Mass Appeal premieres Anderson .Paak’s new web series, A N I M A L. Curated by Ian Schwartzman and Adrian Miller, and shot by Micah Stell, the show is a quick-paced, jump cut-filled account of newfound fame, which mirrors the wonderfully turbulent life that Paak is adjusting to. “It’s been a crazy ride and I’m not really concerned with stopping any time soon,” says Paak. “This is what we’ve been working toward for a long a time. We’re ready, and I’m glad I can share this moment with new fans and people that want to get to know me.” The cast of characters ranges from Paak’s L.A. underground homies like Dumbfoundead and LO_DEF, global superstars like Dre and Kendrick, to his wife and son.
